Preferred new title: A Brief History of the Commonwealth of Virginia, USA
Notes: The original entry was 2800 words, give or take. This version is 2750, but has new sections and new information.
Has been changed into something of which the United Daughters of the Confederacy would not approve. The United Daughters of the Confederacy can kiss my grits.
It's still a brief historical overview, and it needs to stay that way.
There are topics we can pick up later for individual entries, such as:
Who Was Pocahontas, and Why Did John Smith Tell So Many Lies About Her?
How the First Bad Drug Trip Happened in Virginia: The Great Bummer of 1676.
Life in the Army of Northern Virginia: What Was It Really Life?
The George Washington Graffiti, Natural Bridge, Virginia: The Father of His Country as Surveyor and Vandal.
There are others... anyway, let me know if this one's okay.

Oh, sorry, Bluebottle. Thanks for the catch! Dunno how I managed to do that.
And thanks for the link, Tav! I thought of that, but didn't know what to search. Adding now.

You might be tempted to note that in 1619 in Virginia 'the Isle of Wight Plantation' was founded, now Isle of Wight County and one of the 7 oldest counties in America. Be warned - it is not the Isle of Wight, but a fake! Accept no substitutes.

Oh, yeah - there is an Isle of Wight County.
I'd dearly love to, but we need to avoid side trips - and mentioning 1619 would force me to add a whole section. For 1619 is a fateful year in Virginia history. It's when the first Africans arrived in Virginia.
Also, it would involve talking about Puritans. We want to avoid this, lest the Witchfinder General hear about it...
But you might, or might not, be thrilled to learn that the Confederate army had a regiment called the 'Isle of Wight Avengers', whom I now imagine running around in superhero costumes and yelling 'Yee-haw!'.

I picture then more with bowler hats and umbrellas saying, 'Mrs Peel, we're needed' while their tea is stirred anti-clockwise...

As this is an update, so will be applied directly rather than being sent to a Sub-editor, I will give it a thorough readthrough just now
PICTURE EMBED=RIGHT"
"105 settlers including 29 gentlemen, 12 labourers, four boys, four carpenters, a clergyman, a blacksmith, a bricklayer, a mason and a surgeon to set up a new colony." - "105 settlers, including 29 gentlemen, 12 labourers, four boys, four carpenters, a clergyman, a blacksmith, a bricklayer, a mason and a surgeon, to set up a new colony."?
"Trouble in…Not Exactly Paradise" - "Trouble in... Not Exactly Paradise"
"15 May 1776" - "15 May, 1776"
"The Pentagon, erected in Arlington" - "The Pentagon, was erected in Arlington"?
" ordering them removed" - " ordering them to be removed"?
Excellent

I made those changes. Though I think the last one wasn't strictly speaking necessary (at least in US usage, it isn't), if it makes the sentence read better, let's go for it!
