I just sent this email to Snopes.com.

Dear Snopes folks:

Thank you for clearing up the 'Eiffel Tower at night' issue. I ran across a less thorough piece on Youtube, and was worried that I, as Editor of the h2g2 Post, had committed a crime by creating this montage to illustrate an article by one of our members: A87892302

Your explanation relieved my mind: it's only illegal to film the modern lighting display. Ah.

My montage was based on a 1901 stereograph found in the Library of Congress:

along with some snapshots of local fireworks. LC marks this image as 'No known restrictions on publication.' Obviously, the 1901 Paris Exposition is now Public Domain. My faith in the Library of Congress is restored.
