SEx: microprocessor clock frequency

Well I am gona ask question about basic microprocessor 8085.
In 8085 the crystal oscillator is connected at X1and X2 pins that generate a frequencyof 6Mhz ( roughly) and there is a frequency divider at clock input of 8085 that divides the oscillator frequency by a factor of 2. Now my question is that why it is divided by 2 ? Why not 3,4 etc? smiley - erm

The most likely answer is because oscillators only go in two directions. So it is just calculating a mean travel distance.

Mean travel TIME, more accurately. smiley - winkeye

In digital logic circuits frequency division is easily implemented in powers of 2 (eg 2,4,8 etc) with quite simple circuitry. A divide by 2 only needs a single D flip-flop (which itself is only 6 gates in size). To divide by 4, you just need to put a second divide by 2 after the first.

Dividing by other numbers such as 3 in digital logic is harder and takes more circuitry, which takes more power. When the 8085 was developed in the late 70s these were (and still are) big concerns to chip designers.

Hey! Its surely not related to 8085 operations???

uhm .. I'm not a specialist, I was assembler programmer smiley - whistle a bot over thirty years ago smiley - whistle .. isn't one the processor cycle and the other the bus cycle? factor two difference would seem reasonable for that.

smiley - erm I'm too old for this.. smiley - erm

google for 8085 timing diagrams, that should make it clear?

explorer, don't be rude. This is a laid back friendly forum; a small part of a bigger site. Do not demand answers from people! Perhaps you've confused us with an online customer support centresmiley - cross

Explorer, you asked why divide by 2 not 3 or 4. I answered that question. As to what the 8085 does with the clock signals internally. I don't know and I don't need to know. A long time ago I did a little bit of mixed signal IC design work. I thought I'd answer the question asked, not the one to do your assignment.
