Entry: The Flavour Isn't Quite Right - A3920861
Author: Isle - U866506

First entry to the Collaborative Writing Workshop. Is this too little, too much, or just right to start a community collaborative entry?

Since I submitted this, am I the 'managing researcher' of this entry or something? How should I cite other researchers?

Thank you for being patient as I learn.

So, what do you think about the varying flavour of soda?

There is only one thing worse than being Gosho, and that is not being Gosho

I don't have anything to add to the content but I can answer your question smiley - smiley

When you edit the entry you'll see a box where you can add other Researchers' U numbers, below the main text box. Once they're added you'll be credited as the editor of the entry and the others will fall under the 'Written and researched by' label.

An interesting thing I once heard about fountain drinks is that, apparently, they're designed to be drank 2 parts drink to every 1 part ice. To clarify that, if you drink a fountain drink with no ice in it, it'll be one and a half as concentrated as it would be with ice. I find this very interesting, especially because I don't particularly like ice in my drinks.

Ahh see I found this! I live in England but am currently in Washington and things DO taste different here.
McDonalds tastes different, which is odd seeing as it's all the same stuff.
Soft drinks do taste different too.
I can't decide if this is...distribution, place of manufacture, or some magic dooda.

What was the other thing that tastes different...peep I can't remember! marmite is the same though interestingly enough. That gets shipped from England (so is amazingly expensive) but tastes the same as always. Though that could be because it's such a potent thing in the first place.

Interestingly enough, Dr Peppers is owned by a London based company(cadbury schweppes) and is based in Texas.

Framed the 'abstract' and created a bare-bones format for the entry, with some explainations of certain terms. Awaiting antecedotes...
This looks like it could be a slow, long-term process. smiley - cheers

Nice. However, my "anecdote" should be moved to the self-serve bit, though, because that's the kind I was talking about. Hopefully it won't take too long before the fun bits about peoples' experiences start pouring in. smiley - smiley

And, I'd hate to bother you about this, but could you correct an error in my quote? I meant to say 'one and a half times as concentrated' but left out the times. I'd appreciate it...

Not a bother at all! It's nice to have something to do while I wait for the rest of the community to contribute.

Over the next few days I'm gonna get some research started on this; I don't have many antecedotes, but I can always see if there are any facts about how packaging influences flavour, or recipie differences per region.

Yeah, having something to do can be useful. I'm thinking of getting an entry on Attention Deficit Disorder underway while I wait for something interesting to happen to me. (I have ADD, so it's kinda close to my heart)

That sounds like a worthy undertaking. I'll definitely be reading the article: I don't have ADD, but I'm the section leader for a ten-chair trumpet section in my band. The band director is ADHD, his trombone/drum playing son is ADHD, and I'd swear that at least five of my trumpet players are ADD. So I've done a little bit of second-hand ADD management... Any advice (beyond 'Be patient!') would be most appreciated!

As it turns out, there's already an entry on the topic (A803477), but it seems to be focused on children with the disorder. Maybe I'll do one on the condition in adults, but I don't feel the need to as much with an entry in existence.

Here's a subject with which most can identify!!

Good start, this! I had a question about the comments related to the environment (and waxed paper cups).

the Glass for bottles has be be smelted at least once, and heated to great temperatures to form. It doesn't bio-degrade, and can prove a dangerous environmental hazard (mostly on roadsides, in kids playgrounds, on beaches, etc.

Paper is made from renewable materials and bio-degrades with time. It's use-once property makes it less likely to transmit germs, disease, or extinguished ciggies to the next user. (I don't know anything about the wax component.)

There may be enough data to point to which is truly 'better' or 'worse' for the environment in terms of total cost of use. If there is, I'm not aware of it. It's up to you, whether you leave it as is, or research it further.

Cheers!

Flavour differences may sometimes be down to the source of the product.

Ritz crackers for example bought in the UK are made by the Jacobs factory. Travel through the tunnel to France however, and French Ritz crackers are sourced from another Danone factory in the European mainland (Belgium, I think). They are much saltier than the UK crackers and taste like I always remember them years ago. This is because over the years, salt content has been cut from our diet in the UK, much of it in recent years due to government pressure.

Presumably these variations also apply to other products and countries. With most of the big name products, they are manufactured under licence in a variety of different locations.
