And we are people who are serious about making a bid, for a product that they are considering selling. There is no reason why we shouldn't negotiate for this information.

One big problem with the site as it is, over the past years, i has been its inflexability, in the way it hasn't adapted as quickly as it could have done were therre more resources for site development; in particular a new site, Ithink should take more time to engage with the rest of teh WWW; some way to have links to peoples twitter feeds, facebook updates etc., all the other kinda stufff whcih other websites have.
In terms of censorship, if we're not the BBC we dont' need to be so paranoid about this as they are, suitable warnings on pages about it being user generated content, and obvious moderation where required for obvious things like child porn etc... not that Icould ever imagine anyone from H2G2 putting up the kinds of repelent and disgusting stuff which clutters some other online communitys/forums...

Otto Fisch ("Stop analysing Strava.... and cut your hedge") Posted Jan 24, 2011
FOI requests take time, and as has been said elsewhere, are regarded as something of a hostile act.
I would imagine that any 'disposal' process would have to be transparent. Rules for public procurement are very strict - anything over a certain amount has to be advertised in the Official Journal of the European Union. Presumably there's some similar process for disposals - I don't think it's something that can just be stitched up. But I don't know how the BBC fits into this framework - it might be state sector (like universities) rather than public sector. In which case.... who knows?
I agree that my first point - a need for information - does trump the others. However, I don't think that they need hold up hypothetical discussion of the other points in preparation. I feel there's a certain energy and momentum around at the moment that might be constructively used while we're waiting for that information. I'd imagine that some people would prefer to have those hypothetical discussions - even if is ultimately rendered academic by answers to the first point.

Hello all,
The information being discussed has been requested - voluntarily, not through FoI, along with a request for some sort of indication of what process is upon us.
This request for initial information will be followed up tomorrow, very gently and politely.

"we are people who are serious about making a bid"
I hate to say it, but just because we're serious doesn't necessarily mean we'll be taken seriously.

I grew up with HHGTTG and for me, the most intriguing aspect of the guide, was that it was a portable device; an electronic encyclopaedia!
Sooo, why not commission an iPad app - It's the perfect platform, right? I guess too, more and more tablets are appearing ... This could be what the site was meant for .. Just my thoughts!
I'm not a programmer BTW, I just live by the motto, "Time is an illusion, lunchtime doubly so".
I'm happy to pitch in, in anyway I can - I would hate to see this disappear!!!

So....have we decided whether we want fire that can be inserted nasally or not yet? Or was it a wheel...

But before we can decide on the colour, we need the area comitee to decide on how people really feel about it, and then we can think about the colour, I mean, we need to know the ways people want to interact with this 'fire' thing and how it'll make them feel before we decide exactly what colour to make it...

Whatever the heck is going on here, I can donate $20 USD/month to any reasonable community purchase proposal. This cutting of h2g2 cannot be allowed to stand.

An i-pad app... hmmm... maybe we could tie in a link with gps-location-sensing and have it search the guide for information about the locale your are?
Someone got the phonenumber of mr. Tom-Tom ?
Cheers!

Otto, folks, I think the non-exhaustive list may be over in Magrathea's workshop. U14791015
We very much need people who can take on one or more of the topics and run with them. This re-design could and should be done by the community as a whole.
Forgive me if I spam this, I'm short of time and need to get the message out across the wide range of people who've offered to help.

Methinks we needest an official Herald to bringeth the tidings in name
of tha Committee to the outlyingst regions ande peasanths.
On the Google-group I've put up some posts in the "Who's talking about us".
I am sure, as in I am convinced, the h2g2c3 is doing a fenomenal job of truly herculian proportion but the information is coming from several angles/persons and I for one am not quite sure Who Does What(tm) or what the role is of the individual h2g2c3 members.
Maybe I am a little thick and I am sure my memory is a bit foggy at times and I apologize for it but could you amend the "Meet the Committee" page or the "Magrathea Workshop" page so we know whom is busy with what, f.i. external communication/announcements ?
I feel that at this point some functions/roles must have sort of naturally gravitated to certain members of the Committee and the distribution of tasks must be clear by now.
Of course there will be roles/functions not explicitly assigned until now but in order to present an organised 'front' to either the prospective buyer, or the BBC in case noone comes, the Committee needs to define itself as an 'official' organisation on behalf of the Community.
Again, apologies if I've missed reading about it, but I feel it's important enough to ask.

Good point, well made, Martin. I think who is doing what is still pretty fluid, to be honest, but you are right, it would be sensible for any new post about h2g2c3 to say who's doing what.

fluffykerfuffle, proofreaders are very much needed to get the documents right.
The Committee is really busy with all the hustle and bustle to save h2g2 from the Vogons so there is a good chance that vowels are dropped, participles dangled and qwerty mayhem all around.
An o.c.d. for spelling and grammar is a great help.
