When I was a kid , In my city Bangalore, there were sparrow's all over the place, those cute small birds which went tweet tweet. Over the last decade, as Buildings grew bigger, bikes and cars spewed more smoke, and trees made way for bigger roads , the sparrows said Goodbye !

Alas !

yes it is a shame. i also think its a pitty that many ecologists and conservationists tend to concentrate on the more spectacular and rare species of animals while ignoring the fact that many common garden birds such as house sparrows and starlings are declining.

i think they need to start looking at the broader picture. smiley - sadface

True, but this doesn't necesarily mean that global warming is taking place. It could just be that sparrows don't abide well in unban areas and need big open spaces. Which would mean that urbanization and not global wraming is the cause of their disappearance.

What I have noticed is that we now have birds wintering in my area (midwest US) that used to migrate south, like robins. And that is definitely due to rising temperatures.

Bird populations in the US have also been decimated in recent years by West Nile virus, expecially crows, ravens and various jays. Global trade, not global warming, is to blame for that one; infected mosquitoes hitched a ride on a cargo ship or something similar. It's been very depressing to watch.
