Things you didn't know about the Victorians
Xanatic Started conversation Sep 11, 2005
I'm toying with the idea of trying to write a story set in a kind of Victorian times. A steampunk kind of thing. I'm doing some general research about the time, but was interested to know if there were any interesting details I had missed. I figured I'd ask on here if anyone knew of any lesser known things about the Victorians. Like the fact the fax machine was invented back then. Really anything would be good. Scientific or political facts, perhaps something about their clothing. I want a lot of things.

Well, what I was after was the lesser known things. I can read books on the big things, but the smaller lesser known facts is what I was after.

The Adam Hart-Davis looks at some of the big things, but it also peppered through with natty wee facts on little things. I have only seen a couple of the series, but it told me why prison guards were/are called screws Until later....

Here's a little-known thing: for a stereotypically virtuous and caste society the Victorians made a lot of porn.

I don't know how much use this is to you since I can't remember the book or author, but there was a book written called something like "The Real Victorians". It dealt with how we have such a dull grey impression of those days, which is very one-sided and a bit inaccurate. I'm sure there'd be a lot of useful things in it. I'll get back to you if I remember any more.

Years ago I had a conversation about Victorian times with Ben or Montana Redhead. Maybe both, you might ask them
I could be wrong about who it was.
There are several history buffs around here
Maybe there is a history group lists groups I think.
