I was surprised by the % of participation. But the result was quite as expected.

53.6% supported the accession, while 46.4% voted against, with electoral officials claiming 91% of the nearly 300,000-strong electorate had voted.
more intrestingly if that there is now in effect a 2nd referendum as the Maltise PM has now called a snap election. He is thought to be seeking a new mandate to prove the strength of the Yes vote.

I guess the result of the vote will be quite the same here. Exept that it'll get some 50-60% the most.

I would think that it makes sense for the Baltic states to join the E.U. but I could be thinking wrong - what do people see as the pros & cons over in your neck of the wood's

Pro's are obvious - security, open market, social standards, free jobhunt etc. But people here are afraid to loose their illusion of independence, nationality, freedom, also the prizes will get much higher but not income.

Some of the costs are still very different, like real estate, sugar, tobacco, alcohol. Mostly it's about taxes. Oh, and it's also about taxation of the heating and some other stuff...

"real estate, sugar, tobacco, alcohol" joining the EU shouldn't really effect the price of any of these, unless ofcourse venders use it as an excuse to get greedy and up their profits. As for extra tax, the only EU tax is VAT (a puchase tax), even with that I'm guessing that as a nation you would probally better off as you will be taking more out of the EU than you will be putting in for a few years.

You don't need to argue with me. I was just describing the ideas of people not so fond of EU. As about taxes - VAT it is. Exept real estate, this is just a market issue and local regulations.
But - we will be one of the smallest nations in EU. And we have our "union" history already. People need to forget that experience, you know.
And this putting in and taking out busyness - in general numbers it is as you say, the question is just whos money is going to be put in and who is getting the profits here. But that's a whole different story already. We can always say that it's all in public interests and so on...
