How to spell 'remix'...

Post 1

Jamie of the Portacabin

I've just stormed away from a game of scrabble with my family after an argument over how 'remix' is spelled. I say it's 'remix' and they say it's 're-mix', with a hyphen. They also claim that any word with the prefix 're' should have a hyphen. I'm sure they're wrong smiley - grr!

The word isn't in either of our two dictionaries and Mirriam Webster's online dictionary gave an ambiguous result. Does anyone have any other sources that could help?

I know I'm right! Someone please help! smiley - smiley

Thanks Duncan! What I really need is for about twenty people to confirm it, all from different sources! I don't like being wrong! smiley - winkeye

I think a hyphen is inserted as soon as another vowel follows.
remember, redo, retune, -- no hyphen
reallocate, reinsert or reiterate wouldn't read good, would they?

Get an up-to-date dictionary before you play againsmiley - smiley
My Chambers compact (published 2000) gives:
remix verb... to mix again in a different way, esp to mix (a recording) again, changing the balance of the different parts etc.
> noun a remixed recording
no sign of any hyphens there.
Also, I've been teaching English since the 1960s and I wouldn't have put any hyphens in it - so that's two authorities for you smiley - star

Thanks everyone! I needed to prove it to myself more than my family.

Not only do they infuriate me by trying to defend something that is blatantly wrong, they then infuriate me further by taking no interest when I get proof! smiley - grr

Oh well, what can you do...smiley - smiley

It is well known that any family (necessarily of more than one generation) playing any game will contain at least one cheat. At various times in my life I have suffered a cheating whist-playing grandma,a cheating baccarat-playing uncle, a cheating bridge-playing husband and I never win playing Scrabble against my elder son, although he maintains that that is because he is better at Maths than I smiley - star
