GB I would have thought peeling off the dry, dead skin was what one should do?
I think I mentioned the sand or salt for strong abrasives, but a roughish towel and a good rub down after bath/shower must help get all the superfluous flakes off, leaving fresh skin ready for cream, lotion or oil.
There seems to be a lot of common sense involved - we mustn't let ourselves get blinded by advertising!
BTW I have always had dry skin and since early teens used a face cream daily after washing. This seems to have paid off as I have practically no creases or wrinkles yet. Things have changed with face creams since then - at first all that was available for a 14-year-old's purse was Pond's Cold Cream
A colleague at work once even said "I wish I had dry skin, you can put loads of cream on it!!"

Once upon a time, my peers at school said it wasn't fair, I didn't have greasy skin and spots. Little did they know I'd turn into 'the scab beast from hell' a few years later. Oh hum. It's not so bad now I've learnt to control it. Taken me long enough though.
The grass is always greener on the other side isn't it?
Anyway, I've updated the dry skin guide entry from the extra posts put here. In case you've forgotten (or can't be bothered to flick back a page) the entry is at http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/A526411
Any more feedback is still most welcome.
