Of course they had shoes smiley - huh - the point I was trying to make - and failing apparently - was that you might want to take them off when going through an ankle deep pool - they might get wet. Presumably it was custom to remove them when indoors.
Maybe you got slippers when inside...

Considering that they went in rather strongly for hobnails and cleats, I'd expect it was socially the custom to remove shoes designed for the outdoors on interior floors.

Floor mosaics, for example, were popular with the affluent.
