I used to complain that unhelpful memes were a first world problem... but then I took an arrow to the knee.

I get most of these internet meme things but there's one has me well and truly baffled.

Maybe I don't watch enough telly, or some such, but I see it all over Facebook (yeah, I know)

Anyone care to enlighten me?

Tell you what #firstworldproblem does: it tells us something about the state of the modern world we live in. (and its superficiality).

I use First World Problem as both a joke and a serious criticism. The former whenever I feel like it, the latter when people are genuinely complaining about something utterly trivial like it's the end of the world.

but often when I see "firstworldproblem" here it is meant in a dismissive and, dare I say it, patronising way.

Irritating.

Some people really do have problems that are real and big to them. It doesn't help anyone to be told "at least you can drink the water" or whatever
