Don't edit your Personal Space, there's a bug
Baron Grim Posted Jan 19, 2011
Technically, my date on my user space isn't exactly correct anyway. It indicates the page was created on 10 October, 1999, but I had actually joined 9 September, 1999. I just signed up and lurked for a month before I posted anything on my user space. I had to trace down my actual start date by looking up my Unumber via SEF's user number thingy.
A1157997
I joined on that bright magenta Thursday/thing with over 35000 others. It was a busy day.

What happened that day to encourage so many people to join?

There were a couple of things, I believe. I have heard that Douglas Adams made an appearance on some sort of tech show in Britain that day or the night before announcing the original site. I got my notice directly via email however because I had signed up for info regarding Starship Titanic from The Digital Village. I really REALLY wish I still had that email. It was very enigmatic. Unfortunately, that was several computers ago.

When I get a new computer, I always take the disk from the old computer, plug it into the new one (where it becomes a D or E drive), then copy everything into a folder on the new computer. I then remove the disk.
So I have a folder on my present computer which contains everything from my previous computer. Inside that is a folder with everything from the one before that, and so on. Mind you, old e-mails are hard to read because they are not in readable files.

OK... that was just weird.
I just tried to post that exact message above from the new H2G2 and received this message:
NOT SAVED
This message has been blocked as it contains a word which other users may find offensive. Please edit your message and post it again.
That's it. I'm staying in Brunel until this whole mess is cleared up. (I'm too attached to the My Conversations doohickey at the moment anyway. That had BETTER get transferred over.)

Count Zero, we've been asked _not_ to post anything on the new system or to fiddle with it until further notice.

OK... I'm still wading through backlog and hadn't yet read any such announcement. That does explain the mystery of that attempted post. Thanks.

It's in the backlog, and also as a separate announcement:

Got it.
Anyway, I'll just wait. As much as I like some of the look and feel of the new site, without a free standing "my Convos" tool the site loses far too much functionality for me. I'm desperately hoping this is just a temporary oversight. Sadly, I fear that it isn't. There does not appear to be any equivalent utility on the new H2G2. The new "conversations" tab just leads to a rehashing of the old conversations list that was on User Spaces. It's not nearly as user friendly without auto-refreshing and the distinct "New Posts" links and also the utility of clicking those links and having it bring up the new posts in the previous convo's window/tab. That was just too useful a tool to throw out with the new design.

Has this been fixed? Can I change my tagline or does that reset the joining date too?

Hello everybody! The problem with the bug has now been fixed.
I bit the bullet and made a small change to my Personal Space, and it is still showing that I joined h2g2 in 2003. So I think it is now safe for you to edit your personal spaces again.
