For those not in the relevant threads (and those in the relevant threads but who've not bothered to read the backlog where this has been explained multiple times ):
1. Changing your name in Preferences has been disabled in Goo, Alabaster and Brunel. In those skins, you now use the Settings link, but there are limits on what you can do there (restricted to 50 characters, no &%# etc). If you use less than 50 characters and don't need the &%# etc, then just use Settings.
2. You get more choice about what you can put in your tagline if you change the skin to Plain and use the Preferences button there.
3. To change your skin to Plain, you need to change it in the URL, NOT in Preferences. Or, when logged in, go to: http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/UserDetails?skin=plain
4. Don't forget to push the Update Details button
Please don't abuse this, as it's possible this was an oversight and we don't want it taken away.

If you use the skin=plain link and then use the button on that page to go back to your PS, you will find yourself in Plain still. This is an asset if you normally use Brunel, but for the rest of us not to worry - it hasn't changed your default skin and you will revert to that once you use a bookmarked link to h2g2, or presumably next time you log in.

You can also use your browser's back button instead of clicking "Click Here to return to your Personal Space". So long as you've clicked the Apply button beforehand, you'll stay in the skin of your choice.

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
