What does the crescent moon mean in Islam? I tried to find something reasonable in the net couple days ago and I'm not satisfied smiley - smiley There were comments about crescent moon symbolising the Arabian moon calender, some suggestions that the crescent moon inherited from the Babylonians and so on. Perhaps I am expecting religious significance of the moon.
By the way, I think that the Islamic moon is not actually crescent. It seems to be a waning moon. So why is it called crescent moon anyway smiley - smiley

smiley - crescentmoonsmiley - star

Gnomon - time to move on

The crescent moon does not mean anything in particular in Islam; it was the flag of the city of Byzantium, which later became Constantinople, the capital of the Roman Empire, and later still Istanbul when it was conquered by the Ottomans (Turks). Since Istanbul was the greatest city in the Islamic world, its flag became the symbol of Islam and this link is still there although the moon has no special religious significance.

Muslims use the first glimpse of the new moon to start each month of their calendar, so the appearance of the new moon is a time of importance for devout Muslims who fast during the month of Ramadan, but this is not the reason the moon is the symbol of Islam.

"Crescent" comes from "growing" in Latin, but is now used for any time the moon is between "new" (not there at all) and half full, either waxing or waning.

Thanks! So there is no special menaning in it. I mean, it's not like the cross in Christianity.
