Is camp still funny?

So have we defined camp as being affected, extrovert, extravagantly dressed, but still likeable and genuine and all of this nothing (necessarily) to do with sexual leanings? Sounds great, people like that can really cheer you up. But why make them the butt of comedy acts? It is probably the easiest type of character to play, and can easily be overdone for cheap laughs.

Like it or not, though, there is a very strong "gays are ebullient and extrovert and silly" side-taste to this whole thing and I think we ought to give them the floor - anyone here gay?

Semi - and I enjoy a good bit of camping it up am much as the next man, but I take your point - Scene Queens etc. seem to love it, 'Non-scene types' tend not to - in my limited experience.
There are so many ways to express ones "gayness" these days, that I don't believe the camp steriotype is all that harmfull, and even the straightest of people don't believe that all gay men wear pink and mince!

As a gay man, who isn't really 'camp' in the stereotypica Brit Sit-com/ Carry On way. I must say I do do camp as a way to get laughs especially from my frienmds who now I am gay. And as a lot of you know I do act it up at times on site here as well.

So yeah I think it is dead funny, what is really funny about hte early carry ons, was Ken Willaims and Charlie Haughtry acting camp and not being out as gay IRL, so they were acting straight acting gay if you follow me. Even thought now in hindsight we know what they were it made people laugh a lot more at the early cases of campness.

If it is done well, it is subtle and yet plays off the stereotypes that everyone expects.

Well, that's a relief - although it was only to be expected that you lot would be the most reasonable types of people anyway. Do you think I could get the same assurances from West Indians/Asians/Australians/Irish/Scots/Welsh ... in fact anyone who is stereotyped and caricatured (or taken the piss out of, if you prefer it, and depending on the actor's abilities)? This would make life far more pleasant for me. I always get embarrassed for people who are being made fun of this way. Perhaps I'm over-sensitive, because it usually creases me when someone makes fun of me.

Considering DD is also Irish and I know he stereotypically always orders Guinness in the pubs around here but actually prefers other Ales IRL I think he also answers that one. smiley - smiley
