"We were hockeyed" - where does this phrase come from?

Is the pharse "we were hockeyed" (to describe a substantial defeat) just a Dublin phrase or more geographically diverse? Also - where does it come from? The scoring in hockey is usually quite low...a phrase like "we were cricketted" might make more sense.

The scoring in some country's cricket matches is probably about the same as some hockey games!

Knowing nothing about Irish hockey but having seen a few Aussie schoolgirl matches - perhaps it derives from the players habit of regulary trying to cripple/kneecap the opposition with their sticks

I've never heard the phrase before either, but I think Canadians get hockeyed at birth, right between the foot-print-taking and the shot of Vitamin K. Anyhow, I'd reckon it would refer less to the score than the style of play; sometimes you get beaten and sometimes you get BEATEN. I wonder if, in the NHL, you divided the number of stitches by the number of concussions the answer would be 42? Nah. Too many stitches.
