Inequality; what to do?

The principle's the same - people moving from low consuming societies to high consuming ones. Quite apart from the societal impact, it makes an utter mockery of any attempt to cut consumption in the West.

You could make a million arguments about cutting consumption in the West. Why you use that one Allah only knows.smiley - rolleyes

Sadly I no longer have access to the research information that I had when I worked for that insurance company.

But trust me, Pedro, I would recognise a circular argument when I see one. No, it wasn't UN-based research that I relied on to present my conclusions about the likelihood of a pandemic that would wipe out 25% of the UK population by the end of 2007. (Hint: I was right.)

Damn! You beat me to it. That was just what I was about to say about your usual anti-immigration stance.

And, RF, it was no doubt private industry info that made you believe the worlds' financial system would collapse in the last 12 months. So there's pressures of all kinds on those presenting information. And?

Seriously, though, does that make you disbelieve everything every dept of the UN says? Given that you weren't going on about how the banks were screwed last year, who would you believe this year?

And the reason immigration is a factor in the context of inequality in the UK is the majority of immigrants (skilled and unskilled) take up low-paid jobs at the bottom of the heap. The resources directed at reducing inequality and increasing social mobility have to be increased exponentially to keep pace with the rise in need. It wasn't happening when the economy was healthy, what chance when social service budgets are being frozen and/or cut back?

I notice the lack of mention of RBS, HBoS, Lehman Bros, AIG etc being under govt control. You know as well as I do that nobody but nobdoy thought that the 'best' banks in the world were as smiley - bleeped as we now know they are. And given that you're an industry analyst, maybe you should have been?

Anyway, night all.smiley - yawn

So you're saying that immigrants reduce our average eco-footprint then?

A statistician's answer Pedro. If 200 people produce an average of 5t CO2, 300 people producing an average of 4t CO2 is still a 20% increase overall.

Actually, the "best" banks in the world are the ones that have avoided government control. HSBC and Barclays are the two that spring to mind in the UK.

And right back atcha, if the average wage is lowered does this mean fewer people live in poverty (poverty line is 60% of average wage)?
