There are honest politicians. But the dishonest promise a lot more and people believe them.
The real question is, why do people believe ridiculous promises made by politicians?

I've generally found that individually politicians are (mostly) good people who work hard to do what they think is right. It's only when you get a group of them together it all goes the way of the pear. This could be because as a group they have to toe the party line, which will inevitably go agains the grain of what some of them have been promising to work towards when going for the job.
Then again, some of them are plain power crazed tossers, who'll say whatever you want to hear, just so you'll vote for them.

I'll go with Gnomon. Start voting for the politicians based on what they have done in the past, rather than on what they say they will do in the future.
