Simple question :- what does 'lol' stand for?

Post 1

Here's a very straightforward question, which I imagine a fair number of people will be able to answer. I sometimes see this expression 'lol' in forum postings but so far haven't been able to work out what it means. My first thought was 'lots of love', but that doesn't generally seem to fit the context. Please can somebody stagger me with their grasp of the finer points of netiquette, and put my mind at rest.

Many thanks...

Bugger! I was always under the impression that it stood for "lots of lollipops".

I'd been wondering when they were going to arrive.

It stands for two things:

1. Everything I hate about AOL users
or
2. Licking Old Ladies.

You said it - not me!
