"Well it's bound to piss off MJ Simpson, and that can only be a good thing."
Especially as he's not the one who's been asked to write it.

It's just dawned on me that Eoin Colfer's name is all wrong, according to Adams, on what a writer's name should be.
Long first name in small letters on one line, short last name in huge letters under the first name. (can't remember now - that could be from a Dirk Gently novel)

Fan fiction is seldom good, regardless the author. Neither is continuing a book series when a new author when the old one died/got fed up/lost ability to write or whatever.
Let this trilogy of five stay a trilogy of five.

Neil Gaiman was asked about this news and he writes:
"For the record, if I don't get around to writing a sequel to something while I'm alive, I'd very much rather that nobody else does it once I'm dead. It should exist in your head or in Lucien's library, or in fanfic. But that's me, and not every author feels the same way."

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
