I have a solution to the light thing. I have a standard lamp on a timer plug. It needs adjusting every couple of weeks, but that's the only time it's ever touched. It turns on in the evening and off late at night - all without me ever having to move. It's especially nice in winter to come home to a house with a light on already and if it switches off when I'm still up, I know it's past my bedtime!
I have no solution to the rubbish on TV, but I often just turn it off.

I might try one for the kitchen - if I'm out all day it's the room we have to come into and the lightswitch is on the wrong side of the door. It's one thing I like about having fish - there is usually at least one bit of glow!
