Text only version of h2g2

I'm sure I'm not the first to ask, but I can't find the answer...why is there no text-only version of h2g2? Given the nature of the beast it only seems natural that some people want to view it from a pda/hhpc type device.

There is currently a WAP service which is the closest I can find, and anyone not wishing to view pictures in H2G2 can easily turn of pictures in their browser options. I would imagine therefore that anyone connecting with a device not able to view pictures would be able to access the service as 'text only' by default.

Nearly forgot.

Ok, Ok, i DID forget, but then remembered, so it's almost the same thing.

Check out the link on the h2g2 home page know as (among other things) H2G2 on the move for more details.

Happy Researching.

Well the problem I have is this. I own an Ericsson MC12 and would like sometimes to be able to view h2g2 with it. However, it's browser software is such that some pages look better than others. If I turn off the pictures i do indeed get just the text, surrounded by little boxes where the pics should be. However, that way I can't see the lables ie "my home", "don't panic" etc. If I turn the pics on, they are there, but look pretty lousy (you can't read them properly). Also the browser doesn't support frames so forums are out. The MC12 uses the apptly named WINce v1. and frankly isn't as good as my Psion 3a.

Can you get a version of the lynx browser for your system?
It's a text only www browser which puts in the links and the name of the picture when there isn't any ALT tags to go with it.
It does handle h2g2 quite well, but due to the way the site is set out (frames and stuff like that) navigating can be hard.

'scuse my ignorance, I've never heard of it. Where from, how big and, always a pertinent question, how much?

The Pocket Internet Explorer isn't too bad for sites which don't use frames, but some work better than others. It's a damn shame h2g2 isn't a little more friendly to it. I daresay the browser's better now but I don't think I can get my MC12's OS upgraded, it being somewhat long in the tooth.

Lynx is a text browser usually found on Unix systems (where the command prompt lives on smiley - smiley). It doesn't cost anything and you even get the source as it's distributed under the GPL. http://www.trill-home.com/lynx.html has links to loads of info about it. It doesn't look like it's gome to CE yet smiley - sadface but you can always ask on one of the mailing lists if anyone is porting it.
