What do people mean when they say that? What exactly does beat working? Where would all you people sitting in the office right now rather be?

Personally, I would rather own a second-hand bookshop, which may still count as working, but I'd probably be able to spend a lot of time reading as well.

2legs - Hey, babe, take a walk on the wild side... Posted Sep 14, 2004
On a windswept beach in the rain in Suffolk, drinking methylated spirits and smoking cheap tobacco, or failing that just in the pub

Hmm, yes, I quite fancy running a second hand bookshop, although it'd probably end up like a real life Black Books !
Failing that, travelling around, doing whatever comes to mind, if money not a concern then probably go back to uni for a bit as well.
Become an eternal student I think is the gist here

Not sure about the windswept beach, 2legs. I'd rather be basking in a tropical sun - with a gentle breeze. Oh, actually the wind would be OK if there was a windsurfer at hand -as long as the water was warm. I am a fairweather water sports enthusiast!

By 'working' do most people mean the thing they have to do every day that they hate doing?
Otherwise, I quite like working. As long as it's what I want to be working at.
I think working is a fundamental need that most humans have - to be productive, to create, to do something interesting with their days.
So, nothing wrong with working, per se, unless you are in the unfortunate situation of having to simply put in hours to pay your basic living expenses. Which, I guess, might account for a large part of the population. Hence, this phrase - 'beats working!'.

I'm currently "working at home", a wonderful euphemism for "couldn't be arsed to go into the office today". Today's work has consisted of:
1. Do a bit of photo scanning for the library (back catalogue of construction photos)
2. Meeting with client ie. lunch
3. More photo scanning.
As you may have noticed, scanning is interspersed with hootooing, and other internet-based activities.
Beats working? I think so...
Can't get away with it too often, but it makes a nice change.
