Have you noticed how many of the phrases, sayings and proverbs we use have opposite meanings?

Here's one example - feel free to add others:

1. Absence makes the heart grow fonder
2. Out of sight - out of mind

1 Too many cooks spoil the broth.
2 Many hands make light work.

Ha!

A stitch in time saves time.

Look before you leap + more haste less speed.



A friend in need is a friend indeed.

A friend in need is a pain indeed.

I think that should be "A stitch in time saves nine".

I think you will find it is a friend in need has a silver lining Until later....

Hmmm, not sure if it counts as a second proverb, but 'great things come in small packages' does have the rejoinder 'so does poison' Until later....

You can't have your cake and eat it. Yes you can!

It's always struck me that this should be the other way round - because you couldn't eat your cake and still have it.

Psst - I think that's the whole point of the saying!

Just goes to show how useless all these "old wives' sayings" are.

This was the subject of one of the Two Ronnies "news items" many years ago. It went something like:

"Scientists have invented a new contraceptive in the form of a bun, so now you can eat your cake and have it."

No doubt there'll be more in this vein when they return to our screens in the near future.

Think I may start a TTR nostalgia thread - you have been warned.
