atom boy, no need for appologies, I just wanted to make sure before pointing you at hotels in london and finding out you meant somewhere else, assumptions are dangerous things, particularly on the net!
Anyway, all you have to do is google for hotels london and you'll find a shed load of sites offering cheap rooms. Often in some half decent hotels as well. But bear in mind in central london even some of the supposedly good hotels don;t have things like air con or double glazing.
Having said that, whereabouts in London do you need to be based? Go have a look at some of the London Meet pages where various researchers have used various hotels.
I've personally only ever stayed at hotels for business reasons so don;t really know the cheap ones. But go with reputable or well known chains and you should be OK.

I can recommend the Eden Plaza in Kensington - from the front step you could lob a brick into the grounds of the Natural History Museum, and I stayed there a couple of weeks ago for £65 for a room that would have slept three adults comfortably. Highly recommended for a central, quiet, safe location and reasonable price.

I can recommend the Europa Hotel London, it's family - led, with reasonable prices, very quiet, but not central, quite up in the north, near Tufnell Park.
