I'm using Mozilla Thunderbird for email. I've rooted around in the settings & rules, but haven't found the answer I'm looking for. Is there a way to eliminate those spam emails that are marked as read automatically?

is there no way to filter them straight into the bin?

Junk mail generally, but not that category specifically.

I have set up a rule which diverts Junk to a Junk folder. Thunderbird seems to be pretty good at determining what is Junk and what isn't, and it improves as it goes along, based on what you decide is Junk. Mine is set up so that if I click on the Junk/Not Junk button in the inbox, it will remove the mail without me opening it to the Junk folder. I assume that the Junk folder is easy to empty, but I haven't yet tried.
Try Tools > Junk Mail Controls.

Thanks.
I think I may have solved it. Sorting the usual junk is fine, the problem is some emails which appear automatically marked as read - I've made a new message rule related to mail status, I'll see how it goes.

That's not something that Thunderbird has done to me, so I don't know how to deal with it.
Good luck
