A Conversation for Ask h2g2

please help me index/search cd-roms

I wanted to ask if anyone can help me with a software problem. It's not regarding H2G2, but this is the only on-line community of which I'm a member. My problem: I have 250 cd-roms as archives, I need to be able to thoroughly index each one, and search multiple indexes at the same time. Hopefully I can find a way to automatically make a complete data base of all of these cd-roms. What program or type of program is good for this. Can you help?

You could always set up an Access database, which will cover what you want your index to do. However, a mate of mine got a cataloguing program off CNET to catalogue all his CDs and he recommends it highly smiley - ok Shame I can't remember what it's called, but if you do a search on their site you should find something smiley - biggrin

I'd suggest WhereIsIt - available as a cut-down demo version, upgradable to a paid-for full version.
I'm not sure what limits the current demo version has, but the full version is very comprehensive, and it's certainly worth checking out.

Thanks. I'll check that out. I found something at CNET that's simple, free and seems useful - "Catalogue 3b3". It does the job but I'm sure it doesn't interact with anything else. For instance, if I want to transfer the indexes to another program in the future. Maybe _WhereIsIt_ will do the trick. BTW I failed to mention that I'm on a Mac. Thanks again.

The cnet suggetion was great. I found a free version of "Catalogue 3.0b3" that really is exactly what I wanted. I wouldn't have thought to search for a "catalogue" program. I was stuck on the idea of "indexing". The functionality is just what I want, though I suspect it doesn't really interact with anything else. But that may be asking an awful lot.

Whereisit does export to .XLS, .CSV, .HTML, .RTF files, etc. (at least, the full version of v3.26 does).
It looks like it might take a bit of playing around with the numerous options to get the information you want in the spreadsheet, but it seems much would be possible.
