They go back to *your* branch, and are kept for at least 3 years.
One of the more exiting aspects of Barclays, was being tasked with finding some a-holes cheques from the past 3 years.
You can set it up so all your cheques are returned to you with your statement by default.
Each day, the cheques that come in are totted-up, then they are photographed in a hand-fed machine, all off them one after the other for that day. Then they are entered onto the system, at about 1pm.
After that some are filled, waiting for statments for those that want their cheques back. The rest get stuck down in the vault.
After a while, the will to live is lost, and a career in banking deselected for the list.
