Anyway, my contribution for the day is:
The original Sam Gamgee was a Birmingham based GP who developed and patented a way of steralizing cotton wool thereby making it a much more effective and wideranging tool medical tool - whether he actually treated J.R.R.Tolkein during his youth spent in the city I don't know

If you have a refrigerator working in a room that you can seal off to prevent heat flowing in or out and you leave the door open before you shut the room, the room will actually get hotter, *not* colder, as time progresses.
This is because energy is continuously being pumped in through the electric socket and all of this is converted into a rise in temperature - according the First Law of Thermodynamics (see A467714 for details).
