The link above is a conversation someone on wiki had with me a short while ago.

What's your opinion and should we ban any links to wiki in relatiation, or is that just plain petty?

Not him

There are places where we would lose out by not including a wikipedia link. in those places, we should have the link. in the rest of cases, I'd advise against it, as wikipedia is not a reliable resource. maybe 98% reliable, but not as reliable as hootoo. In short, only if it's useful.

Secretly Not Here Any More

I don't see why we should link to them if they're banning links to us. "Do unto others..." and all that jazz.

There is only one thing worse than being Gosho, and that is not being Gosho

So let me see if I've got this right. Wikipedia members wake up one day to find that a whole load of articles are suddenly sporting links to h2g2 edited entries, whereas the site as a whole had almost none - or perhaps even one at all - before, except on the Wikipedia h2g2 and Douglas Adams articles.

So let's turn this round and ask what your reaction would be if (assuming it was possible) a whole host of edited entries suddenly acquired links to Wikipedia articles.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if some Wikipedians are seeing this in the same way you might see a bunch of kids running down the street where they live, tagging everything in sight with spraycans.

I don't think this a good idea in the first place, but if it is to be done it shouldn't be done en masse. We have rules about spamming and flooding - they do too. If something is done repeatedly and in several different places by different people it will almost always be seen as a campaign (whether it is not, and in this case I think it is), and not all campaigns are welcome.

You're right. If it's done retrospectively, it really should be done transparently, and with some sort of agreement. After all, it would enhance the Wiki entry, so there's no real reason why it should be a problem.

There are only 7000-odd EG articles versus 1,267,739 Wiki articles.
Even one link each would be but a drop in the Wiki ocean.

Maybe the decision should lie with the guy who suggested it in the first place?

I don't think posting on wiki that this is essentially a way of getting better google hits for h2g2 was a very good idea smiley - erm
