ive always wondered why, in a supposedly dry country (such as oman or uae) you can still buy alcohol in the hotels?

Try Bahrain... you can get drinks in the hotels, if you can get into a hotel bar for all the Saudi Arabians who are in there having a drink (Saudi is completely dry... they just come across the causeway when they fancy a drink!)
