Is it okay to design a baby to treat anotherr?
Z Posted Apr 2, 2003
I was just curious, my mind's been changed on this anyway- it seems to be the right thing really........
I have to admit if I now, (at teh age of 21) had this condition and I wouldn't want my parents to have another child with the sole aim of providing me with a transplant..
but then again, I don't think I'd know how I felt until it happened..

There are so many subtle influences on a childs psyche that its hard to prdict the impact of what the parents would like happening. However whats certain is that if the parents and wider family see it as something positive and express this in the childs presence it is very likely that the children will see things in that way too. Later when exposed to societies prejudices and sensationalist "frankenstein babies" talk in the media the children involved may need help to come to terms with what has happened. This outcome is just a possibility and less likely than the chances of the condition progressing in the way previously stated. Which in our backward looking society is what will probably happen.
I despair when I hear the phrase "we shouldnt be playing god" hears the news folks:
1) THERE IS NO GOD
2) IF WE SHY AWAY FROM USING NEW TECHNOLOGIES AND MAKING FORWARD LOOKING CHOICES ABOUT HOW WE USE THEN OTHERS WILL AND MAKE THEIR OWN RULES
