No more so than many other clebrations where commercialism has appeared to take over, like Christmas, Easter, Birthdays etc.
The fact that you dont like the commercialisation of the celebration, and who does, it doesnt meant that you cannot embrace the pricipals of the celebration and ignore the commercialism.
Just accept breakfast in bed with good grace - it costs nothing except a bit of time and effort and the part of the provider.

I'm not a mother but I've stopped buying cards altogether - I refuse to pay up to £3 for a peice of paper to say hello on.
The only exception is for my Grandma who I know *really* appreciates getting a card and for whom I'm willing to pay well over the odds to get a nice card that I think she will like...but this is mainly because I hardly ever see her and we are both a bit too awkward on the phone.
My mum knows how I feel about cards and every yr threatens not to send me one and every yr I hope she will stick to it (I really really hate cards) and every yr she gives in and sends me one which makes me feel guilty about not sending her one (I always phone)
I'd much rather have a chat with someone or write them a long letter/email than pick a random card (that I love and they hate) and spend 30 seconds writing it...peoples time and thought is worth 1,000,000 times more than a peice of card with a joke/picture on it.

Well I'd like a lot more attention from my family EVEN if it is a con and EVEN if it is only for one day.I'm feeling very unappreciated. Is a card really too much effort to produce? My husband always insist we send flowers to his mother(he sends me to do it) but doesn't ever kickstart our children into producing something for me.
Incog.

Yep, I think it's got too commercial. We never used to celebrate it when I was a child, partly because it's very near my Mum's birthday.
My hubby made the mistake of saying once or twice that we don't celebrate because 'every day should be mother's day'. I think I made it clear that I hadn't noticed!
So nothing special will happen tomorrow - but it would be SO nice if someone surprised me with some of my favourite (no-one seems quite sure what sort I like) or suggest I put my feet up while they do some chores (even if I'd have to tidy up after them later....).

My kids don't even knowwhen mother's day is. Consequently, the Breakfast on bed thing is non-existent. However, in my own quiet way, I do call my own mom and wish her well. Granny passed away many years ago!

Poor Incog & Teasswill
Incog I'd tell him to send his own bloody flowers, and if I were you I'd go on strike tomorrow, no Sunday lunch unless they cook it!and wash up as well!!!!!Go out for a long walk or have a lay down, write notes - tell them you deserve a day off, and where's your Mother's Day gift? MAKE them feel guilty.
Have some from me.
I agree about the card thing.
March 3rd was my Dad's 85th birthday. I searched high & low for the perfect card {he appreciates a card more than a gift but I still got him a bottle of whiskey} the card I found was £3.35....
Likewise the Mother's Day card for Mum, then Monday is my son's birthday - he got a 39p card
When my parents are gone and *I* am head of the family I will tell everyone, NO MORE CARDS. And mean it.
If they send them to me, that's their business, but I would rather have a visit or a phone call.
I agree with the previous poster {sorry, I can't remember who said it & if I press the back button I will lose what I've already typed}
Time is the best gift you can give anyone. Your time.

Well..........no flowers, no pressies and no card. But I did get an e-mail from daughter in Sydney ...and two cups of in bed this morning.
I'm just going to please myself this afternoon. The boys have golf organised so I'm going to put my feet up and do some sewing.
Enjoy your day everyone.

Oh Dear
Mothering Sunday is a long standing tradition - long, long before the card companies muscled in on the act. If the card companies (and toiletries and chocolates and so on) want to try and relieve you of your money, that doesn't mean you have to disapprove of Mothers Day.
When we were children Mum made it very clear that she thought Mothers Day cards from the shops were a waste of money, but that a homemade card would do nicely - and I can see now that she was right - it didn't waste our pocket money, made us put a bit of real thought into it, gave her soemthing which mant far more, and by giving us an opportunity to demonstarte our creativity was in some way a reflection of what *she* had given *us*
My daughter's less than a year old, and not up to makingcards yet, but my husband got her to do a scribble on some paper, and then used the computer to convert the xcribble into some rather stylised daffodil wrapping paper - glasd to see he's making an effort too!
And my Mum? Well, me having a baby this last year has got us talking about childhoods. One of the few things I had as a child that had been Mum's iwhen she was little was an old fashioned children's story book, We were both sad when we realised that neither of us had it any more and it had been lost in the many house moves. So, I've done a bit of hunting on the internet, and found exactly the same book, same edition (in Cornwall!) and that's what she's getting. One day it will be passed on to my daughter.... I think it's a fine way to recognise Mothers Day, and Hallmark haven't received a penny....

I don't send a card but send flowers. My daughter usually makes my card ..much more appreciated. I have a new scarf and some ..it's nice to feel appreciated...it doesn't cost much to make a card and have in bed. Some mothers never get any thanks for the hard work they do..so I think mothers day is for them to get what they deserve.
