The Second Coming

ITV Sunday/Monday. Did anyone watch it? What did you think of it?
Seems to have passed by without the violent reactions expected. I wonder if that's because those likely to be offended ignored it & those hoping for something really thought provoking were let down?

I turned off after an hour. Too obvious for me...modern Christianity for the TV generation. Didn't bother watching the rest. Was quite well shot though, for an ITV drama.

Only seen the first half ( got the second part on video) but WOW! It rocked. The first thing in years that ITV has done which made me think that. Really well done. Need to steel myself to see the next half (I cannot see it ending well - nothing seems to go well in The North of TV Land). Well, just my £0.02 Until later....

I thought it was good, and thought the story ended well, if oddly abruptly. Ended far better than it started - the moment of not very convincing revelation followed by 40 days in the wilderness (Yorkshire) was a bit silly. Not terribly thought provoking really, but it came to a conclusion I'd be happy with for the world - don't want to say what that is though, as I don't want to spoil it for Crescent. Not necessarily christianity for the TV generation though - quite far from it!
I loved the guy that was playing the demon, the lonley hearts guy - really well cast.
I heard an interview with the director - he also did Queer as Folk, and Bob and Rose. He said it was a challenge for him to think about this stuff as he is an atheist, and the heterosexual relationships were interesting for him too.

I thought it was great. And I didn't see the ending coming. I also thought there would be more of a reaction / protest from Christians.

I think it got better as it went on, so shame you didn't stick with it Saturnine. Certain aspects I found too implausible, but I thought it was certainly original and in essence a good ending.

Well, I've been researching that whole spectrum of religion for a while (the ife of Christ). I personally found it a little too unoriginal in the grand scheme of things (it *was* modern Christianity for the TV generation), and was a little bored after an hour. Other people may have a different perspective. But for me, nah. Not something I could be bothered with.

Er... do you know how it ended?
The Second Coming
Saturnine Posted Feb 13, 2003
Nope. Catholic Church did him in? Or did peace on earth reign supreme? Or did the Devil rise and ravage the earth with demons and flames and resurrected bodies?
Do tell?
The Second Coming
Saturnine Posted Feb 13, 2003
Or was it just a dream? Or a paranoid delusion?
Million and one potential endings.

I'm not going to say here because Crescent hasn't seen it yet.
Suffice it to say that it's not exactly Christian (though a case could be made for that view), it plays with some interesting ideas, and it's hardly lacking in originality. I don't think I've ever seen, read, or heard anything even a bit like it. Whether that makes it any good or not is, of course, another question.

Hey. I have a personal space you know...don't just tell me it's "hardly lacking in originality" and then not back up the statement without letting me decide whether it is or not! They said that about The Sixth Sense...and that was hardly interesting!!!

I actually really enjoyed The Second Coming, which was something I wasn't expecting. Christopher Eccleston was brilliant as Steven Baxter, and the rest of the cast was good also.
The end came as quite a shock, as I wasn't really expecting it. I was kind of hoping for Judgement Day to come along, just to see how it would have been done.

I watched it all.
I enjoyed the performances, and I was shocked by the ending, I also didn't expect the follow-on ending, (carefully choosing my words so as not to spoil the second part for Crescent)
Anything that can keep me in suspense until the end gets the from me!
Please hurry up and watch it Crescent, then we can discuss it in full!

My thanks for your consideration It is very much appreciated We will be watching it this weekend, but I will not return to this thread until Monday, so please go ahead, discuss, show Saturnine how easy it is shock people, how (At least the first half) did not seem that preachy or Christianity for a TV generation Again, my thanks for your forebearance Until later....

Oh it *so* is Modern Christianity for the TV generation. It's accusatory without being specific. The fat bitter guy was the one possessed by "evil"...it was an average person with a working class accent who ended up being Christ. And lashings of guilt and a moral overtone at the end (according to what I have been told)...
Interesting, but not interesting enough for me.

not really lashings of guilt and moral overtones. Not sure what you have been told. I thought the story was dealt with in a way I had not seen on tv before so it was something new - have seen something similar in books though. Actually the demons were in all sorts of people.
I love the way you are sticking to your guns on this one Saturnine, without actually having seen all of it and in the face of the comments of all the people that did watch it
