Tomorrow's World axed
winnoch2 - Impostair Syndromair Extraordinaire Posted Jan 8, 2003
I personally think T.W. began its swift decline from the series that first featured the, frankly awful, swimming/happily drowning baby titles, replacing the previous series rotating brain/maze opening/closing titles and also heralding the change of theme music!
When that new series began(about 3 or 4 years ago?), i noticed a marked difference in the format and 'feel' of the program(for the worse).

Frankly, I think TW has never been the same since they stopped demonstrating scientific principles with ping-pong balls in glass tubes.
I still yearn for the glory days of Michael Rodd and Kieran Prendiville.

On a totally banal and inconsequential note, the later series did have Phillipa Forrester going for it
Aparentaly viewing figures rose steeply when she joined the team... must be something to do with her explanatory tecniques...
Save Phillipa !!!

This really sucks. But whilst being a big fan of the show I can't say that I have seen it in the last year.....is it scheduled correctly ?
They should definitely keep though and maybe put it on at a better time or better still put it on 2 with the rest of the Beeb's good shows.
Am with the enlightened soul above who credired Phillipa Forester for it's recent brilliance. Mmm, think I'll rename this thread Save Phillipa.......

Careful, winnoch2, that's what we used to think about Carol Vorderman...
I have to admit I haven't seen the show in over a year, either... It always seems to clash with something else I want to watch. Don't axe it; just move it to 8PM!

See the figures probably dropped when Phillipa was off on maternity leave recently.
Hey guys she is back so the figures should start to go up again once we all catch on.
Save Phillipa !!!

Hmmm... "Tomorrow's World with Phillipa Forrester, Kate Humble and Carol Vorderman - Tonight's top story, surface tension modifiers in wet tee-shirt contests"... Could catch on...
Save Phillipa !!!

Don't forget the different transparency of various materials when wet.
Hold on a moment. Why am I encouraging you to debase this once fine programme? Bring back all the oldies, eg William Woollard or whatever his name was. I could try to claim senility for my inability to remember names but then I'd have to conclude that I was probably born senile and it was all downhill from there!

The "Wet tee-shirt" idea is the sort of "dumbing down" I could cope with... Just so long as the actual technobabble was up to spec., I think it could only enhance the programme.
As a parallel example, I get all my world news coverage from a Canadian website called "Naked News", where the newsreaders remove all their clothes as they read the autocue. It doesn't mean that the news is dumbed down in any way, just that I'm more likely to give it my full attention...

It's surprisingly good... I paid Canadian$2 for a weekend preview back in the early days (about 2.5 years ago), and just before Christmas they e-mailed me and said they were doing a special offer for "early supporters", where if I signed up for half the normal price, my subscription would stay half-price for as long as I maintained it. That works out at just under Canadian$5 a month, or less than 17 canadian cents (7p) a day - it's a fraction of the price of the local newspaper, and far more entertaining and informative... With my broadband connection, I get six shows a week (including the long weekend "magazine") with a smooth, full-screen display at slightly better than TV resolution!
I wonder if Phillipa would consider emigrating to Canada for a presenting job...

The one that stands out for me was the microwave boiling water. Oh and was the first Goonhillie Down UK/US live link on TW?

mmm kate humble... Yep i'd watch again if that trio were presenting
(so glad we've managed to keep the tone of the thread up- would've hated to see us going off topic or pander to more base male desires.. )

I'll vote for Phillipa too! I love seeing her on Robot Wars, in the pits, interviewing the owners of the latest deceased robot.
Phillipa has done a lot for increasing the credibility of engineering on TV (particularly for girls) and has without doubt inspired many a teenage male fantasy (half the thirty/forty somethings of the UK harbour fantasys involving either Phillipa or Gail Porter).
Excellent use of funding by the Beeb, to address the needs of more than one demographic using one presenter in more than one programme!
