Teenage girls like boy bands because they can; because when it comes to buying CDS & mags, their money is as good anyone else's. When I was in my teens I was a fan of a boy band (shan't say which one, must retain some dignity), but as I grew older and heard more music from a wider array of artists my affection for the dance-pop group waned.

I don't think there's any need to resort to pop-psychology to explain a strong 'girl following' - is social flakiness and gullibility the reason for teenage (and older) guys buying first-person shooter games in huge numbers? And why isn't their singular preference similarly held up as a sign of mass stupidity?

Personally I feel the greatest crime 'teenybopper' pop commits is in the form of execrable lyrics. If I hear one more maybe/baby rhyme, or 'throw your hands up in the air', I'll snap off my radio antennae.

Perhaps the last word should go to my Mum, who always responds to my disparaging remarks on the quality of boy-band songs by saying, "Well, at least they can sing."

The one thing about the big following that Boy bands have going for them is that there is a market for teenage girls and their hormones. The boy bands fill the criteria of these great looking guys that are the image that we has been forced down our throats since we were little. The good looking prince... so the boy bands are just a step up. The thing is that teenage guys do get the same sort of fixation as the girls do it is just that the boys are more private. Does Pamala Anderson really know how to act?? Does there really need to be web sites dedicated to Anna Kornakova bending over to pick up a ball?? Would "Tomb Raider" have been as popular a game without Lara?? and don't make me start on that magazine collection under the bed!!! The difference is that girls are more open, and well obsessive about our "hot guys".
