what shall I do? All my work is done, my boss is in America, out of contact and not due back till Monday. Should be a few days of freedom but I can't leave the office in case he phones. How could one productively spend this time with only a phone and a PC to play with...?

Forward your phone to a cell phone (rent one if you don't have one). And forget about your PC!

Fill your mind with literature, or look at the pictures. If reading is too much effort, listen to music. Bring a companion for conversation, chess games and /or casual sex. Find some more work to do. Put on the answerphone and go to the gym. Take two hour lunch breaks and go shopping. Surf the net. Any and all of the above

i've got a similar problem... i have to do my eleven months of civil service. the job i have is really fun, but it's in shifts. and the nightshifts (11pm - 7am) can be REALLY boring...
