Do you mean the Guards trilogy by Pratchett??
Isn't it Constable Carrot? I think there are a lot of constables in the Guards

You could have answered my question, you know , how do you expect to get advice when people have to guess what you're talking about ?
I've read all five books, but can't recall a name of a constale, in fact, I can't even recall any constables. So, which of the books are we talking about ?

There is a policeman, if I recall correctly, who tries to arrest Ford and Arthur when they accidentally appear at Lord's on the sofa in the whole Krikkit episode.
Is that in LtU&E?

That policeman doesn't have a name though.
There are two Galactic police at the end of the HHGTtG who arrive to shoot at Zaphod for stealing the Heart of Gold. Marvin talks to their spaceship and it becomes so depressed it commits suicide, thereby also disabling the life support units, so the police die.
They don't have names in the book but when this was on the radio and on TV they were called Shooty and Bang Bang.

Hi coelacanth,
I know all the books AND the TV AND radio scripts. The problem is that my friend´s quiz was really about a constable mentioned in one of the five books
It really makes me mad ... easy Mungo ... easy

ut Dirk Gently is a private eye, as far as I know ? Have only read two of them, can't recall any constables either

I'd be willing to bet the deliciously chilled beverage currently sitting to my left that there are no constables in the Hitchhiker's Guide books. Not in the version I have, anyway (I don't know if there are different versions of the books or simply different collections).

What about the people aboard the spacecraft Arthur and Fords end up in, those who have been made redundant from their home planet - were there any constables among them ?

If I recall correctly, those people on the ship were from service industries, like hairdressers, waiters and so forth.

Yes, but the so-called captain behaved like a constable, didn't he ? It's been so long that I read it

I find it highly suspicious that a bunch of Hitchhikers experts (i.e. most of the people who subscribe to this site) haven't heard of a constable, and yet someone who claims to know all the books says he does exist.
I, too, have read all the books. OK, not recently, but I tend to remember names.
Either:
1. Our guest is confused.
2. Our guest is thinking about Dirk Gently.
3. Our guest is a troll.
