I like White best but brown is better for you.
Why the sudden requests for contacting people at King Alfreds? That's two in just a few minutes.

it all depends what you want when you have digested it. White bread is broken down to sugar, brown bread is broken down to sugar and brown colouring, and wholemeal bread is broken down to its vitamins and minerals and roughage.

Yes, white bread can have some vitamins and stuff, but they are not naturally occuring, and have been added artificially.

Well I have a food sesitivity to wheat - nothing dramatic - I get bloated when I eat it and have more energy and better resistance to minor illnesses when I don't eat it. But eating it all the time puts my immune system into overdrive, and I then get sensitivities to dairy products, alcohol smiley - yikes and a long list of otherwise harmless fruit and veg. At one point the only thing I could ever eat in restaurants was a chicken ceasar salad, no crutons no parmesan. I have eaten an awful lot of them.

If I have to eat bread, I much prefer brown, but I find even that is a big gluey.

I bought some spelt shortbread the other day, and I must say, for cakes and confectionary I much prefer white flour.

But Brown is Best!

Ben

Granary, aka bread with bits in. Some are whiter than others but the bits in it make it special.

Muesli/breakfast breads are lovely too.

Brown, as long as it's fresh. Although toast made with white bread is rather nice.

Nothing beats the brown for sarnies, though. smiley - smiley

My science teacher once told me that white bread is actually better for you than brown bread. But wholemeal bread is in a league of its own, health-wise, and can taste very nice indeed.

So I choose wholemeal, with white bread on some occasions.

Personally, I love wholemeal bread when it's very fresh. I can eat slices of it on its own, without butter.

White bread I hate, unless it's thickly-sliced and toasted. Then it becomes an entirely different food, one to be soaked in cholesterol-rich butter and globs of jam.

Wholemeal bread = healthy, angelic food, to be filled, or topped, (if desired) with delicious but nutritious foodstuffs.smiley - angel

White bread (toasted) = evil. To be topped with calorific, indulgent foodstuffs, eg cream cheese, honey, jam, peanut butter, perhaps all at once...smiley - devil

Well, this is really a rather tricky question: it depends very much on what is to be done with teh bread in question:
I find white bread toasts up better, for breakfast toast with butter on, white tends to be favoured, though if you have a decent toaster: that really can take slices of varying, and very large thickness; wholemeal can be nice sometimes.

Bacon sandwiches, weather with, or without an accompanment of fried egg, can only truely work on white, thick cut fresh white bread from a backery, non of the precut stuff, can't get the true thickness...

Now, fried cheese sandwiches: butter bread either side, cheese in middle and shallow fry in sausepan using only the BUTTER on the bread, again, is best achieved by thickly cut fresh white bread.

Sandwiches...
a chapter in itself, the sandwich i think, is useually best achieved on wholemeal thick cut bread, brought from the backery whilst still hot and sliced a few hours later to make a wonderful sandwich...

But, french bread... I've never seen brown, or wholemeal french bread, but do love it, particularly with some of teh softer cheeses, or with various fried items such as eggs, sausage bacon etc in it...
And then of course is the cheese and bacon micro-zapped french stick sandwich <biggrin. georgus..

Hmm, that clarify's nothing...
Given a single choice, I'd have to say wholemeal, as it is still pretty versitile, and heck of a lot more tasty..

my fav. bread has to be the hunny and sunflower seed (brown) bread i get from the local bakers but a good crusty white crown type loaf can be very nice.

*gives thread a swift kick*

I don't really have a preference, although looking at my recent shopping habits, I seem to be on my seventh or so loaf of white bread in a row.
