The Long Dark Tea Time of the Soul

I read it on holiday in Tenerife, and thought it was excellent. It's a travesty that there isn't an Edited Entry yet about the Dirk Gently books.

I can't do it myself, because I haven't read Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, and I don't quite feel worthy of analysing the works of our late, great founder.

Discuss.

I also recently read The Long Dark Tea time of the Soul while on holiday (although no where as exotic as Tenerife). But having never read Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency either, I suggest someone else *looks around for volunteers*.

I loved Dirk Gently, possibly more than Hitchhikers (and thats saying something). He was just such a lovable character! The only thing that disapointed me was the ending.

The Omnibus programme last night has renewed my interest and I am considering the Dirk Gently books for my upcoming holiday. I also like the look of The Meaning of Liff. Anyone read it?

I gave the Meaning of Liff to my friend as a birthday present one year, and I had a good read at it before it was wrapped up. It definately seemed worth it, although something to dip into occasionally rather than reading cover-to-cover.

I read the dark teatime last week, and found it long-winded, with a nice idea behind it.

READ Dirk Gently's Holistic detective Agence IMMEDIATELY! smiley - crosssmiley - winkeye

It's *much* better than The Long Dark Teatime of the Soul. And as you will no doubt observe - that makes it an excellent book indeed.

The Meaning of Liff is brilliant - had me in stitches like all of his books (I've never read Last Chance to See).

The Meaning of Liff is quite brilliant. What a great idea to give entertaining meanings to all those quaint and lovely words which are otherwise employed only as place names!

I've got Dirk Gently's Holistic Detectivw Agency from the library today.

Did you know that a sizeable portion of the plot was taken from a Doctor Who story, Shada, that Douglas wrote and never got made?

Two of my favourite books ever... definitely worth reading, although both are rather obscure and incomprehensible at times...

No I didn't know that it was based on a Doctor Who episode that never got made. That is indeed interesting and i can see it now thinking about it! The whole business with the sofa stuck halfway up the stairs defintitely fits in there smiley - smiley

I don't think that part was in the Doctor Who story...there's probably details or possibly even the entire script of it somewhere if you do a search on 'Shada'.
It was set largely in Cambridge, though.
