A Conversation for Ask h2g2
Marking your place in a backlog
Deb Started conversation Oct 15, 2005
I've just come across the "Tell us a joke" thread with something like 9,000 posts . I want to read through them when I have time, but does anyone know an easy way to mark your place? Apart from keeping a note on a posti-it pad.
Thanks
Deb

Click on the link that says "X new posts" rather than the "latest post: X minutes ago" link. It'll go to the page of 20 postings you last looked at in that thread. This doesn't help though if you accidentally click the latest post link, as that'll reset the number of new posts to 0.

The DNA software should do it for you. Go to the bottom of the first page of the thread and click on the link that says 'Click here to subscribe to this conversation', then go back to your Personal Space. Find the thread in your list of conversations and there should be a link that says 'xxxx new posts'. Clicking on that will take you to the post immediately *after* the last one that you've read. It'll do the same each time you read a number of posts and then leave the thread, automatically bookmarking your place, until you've caught up with the backlog, assuming that you read more old posts than people produce new ones.

Another option would be to use your browser's Bookmark/Favourites, updating it each time you read some of the thread, this way has the advantage of being able to catch up without being signed on, if you wanted to do that.
