The basic idea Ulysses31 :
During a routine journey to Earth Ulysses's son, Telemachus, is captured by the Cyclops. Ulysses succeeds in rescuing Telemachus and two other children, Numinor and his sister Yumi. However the Cyclops is killed and the gods of Olympus are enraged. Zeus puts Ulysses's crew into suspended animation and wipes the navigational charts from his ship's memory. Only by finding the Kingdom of Hades can Ulysses lift the curse from his crew and return to Earth, where his beloved Penelope waits for him.

"Ulysses, Ulyssee-eees, Soaring through all the galaxies..."
Fantastic cartoon (even though I haven't seen it since the 80s) with great music (downloaded and always available on my computer at home ). Sausagenet is an excellent site, especially as it is one of the few places one can get information on what was perhaps my favourite show as a nipper, Star Fleet. (Kinda like Anime meets Thunderbirds, but cooler )
Does mention of this show tug any nostalgic strands of memory?

Hmmm, I am not sure - planets coming into conjunction, a strange wooden pirate space ship, a big x wing craft thing - I do not know the name of it, but I think it was puppets. Is this what you are speaking about N7?

Yep. The X-Bomber, the Dai-X robot, Shiro Hagen (the silver-helmet-wearing hero) and lots of far-fetched puppet-based outer-space action!

I remember watching it every Saturday morning, a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away Wouldn't mind seeing it again, as I almost remember it was above your run of the mill series then Of course it was almost 20 years ago now....

Likewise on wanting to see it again - I wonder how old I was when it first aired? Mind you, they've recently re-released that ancient 'Battle for the Planets' (I think that's right) proto-anime cartoon series on video, which I used to love when I was a seriously weeny nipper, and it just makes me cringe if I see it now.
I just hope the same thing doesn't happen with, say, Thundercats, He-Man or any of the other things my youth was built upon.

If you haven't heard them, go and look now, it's even more funny than the real thing
