I have a gumball route that I operate from my house. I am curious what unusual items have others observed being vended vended from mahines. I have read that in Japan they vend everything from books/video tapes to a clothing.

Oh yes. I saw big bags of rice, bottles of whisky and gin (how long would that machine stay unvandalised t in England?) and tins of hot coffee. In fact, I reckon you could survive in Japan by just bobbing from one vending machine to the next and get all your shopping done.

The only clothing I've seen offered in vending machines in Japan is underwear made of paper. It's viewed as a great convenience.
Unless, of course, you include the wet bar at Japanese love hotels, which includes finer "garments" and "accessories". . .

It probably would go unvandalized longer in England than it would in Ireland or Scotland, Mate! Slainte!

There's a bar in Stranraer (That's southwest Scotland) that sells inflatable sheep and other "novelties" not suitable for mention on the BBC.
