Mortgage and Second Mortgage

I'm just about to sign up to one of the most grown-up and scary things a person can do (maybe apart from having kids or driving a Volvo). Buying a house and getting a mortgage. The house bit is ace, we love it, have lots of ideas. Mortgage bit is far scarier - it puts debt into a whole new perspective.

Which leads me to my 2nd point - about Iceland Iceland looks like a really excellent place to visit - fantastic scenery, hot springs, Northern Lights, volcanoes, Bjork and fairies. I really want to go there next summer for a holiday. However, I've now realised that it will require taking out a second mortgage. Haven't even got the first one yet.

Soooooo if anyone has any top tips for going to Iceland on the cheap (from the UK) I would be most greatful. Thought it would be nice to travel there over a few days - drive up through Scotland and take the ferry via the Faroe Isles. But my beloved partner can't think of anything worse than driving up (rain), being on a ferry (rain and wind and choppiness) and then another ferry (ditto). whatever, it's gong to be pricy. I may have to sell my car just to get 2 nights in a youth hostel - yikes!
