I assume that the bath houses are segregated by gender. But are they for adults only? I'm 15. Would I be able to walk right in, or do I have to come with an adult?

Most are separated by gender, but there are many mixed baths, especially in the more isolated resorts. Most people seem to forget all modesty when entering a bath with a bunch of naked people, and it is very satisfying being naked without a care.
Japanese public baths are not at all dodgy, they are a traditional family thing, and people will often take their children of both sexes in with them. Everyone is welcome and one is seldom treated with any disrespect (there can be exceptions to this.)
And it is always entertaining, as a foreigner, to notice people pointedly trying not to notice you.
