Getting in on the Christmas journalling

Happy Christmas, everyone.
And it's... the flying pudding! It reminds me of a superhero.
Christmas Eve is being a bit depressing in my family. We used to have a big Christmas Eve dinner and a Christmas Day brunch, but this year no one's coming in till dinner tomorrow. It could be worse, though. I'm happy to be alive.
I may get modded for copyright violation and things, but I'd like to quote John Lennon and my favourite Christmas song:
So this is Christmas, and what have you done?
Another year over, and a new one just begun
And so this is Christmas - I hope you have fun
The near and the dear ones, the old and the young.
A very merry Christmas and a happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one without any fear.
And so this is Christmas, for weak and for strong
For rich and the poor ones, the world is so wrong
And so happy Christmas, for black and for white
For yellow and red ones - let's stop all the fight.
A very merry Christmas, and a happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one without any fear.
And so this is Christmas, and what have we done
Another year over and a new one just begun
And so this is Christmas - I hope you have fun
The near and the dear ones, the old and the young.
A very merry Christmas, and a happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one without any fear.
War is over, if you want it
War is over
Happy Christmas...

Holidays? Is everyone else having a holiday?
Seriously, all the best. You picked the second-best Christmas song; the best features the line 'you're a bum, you're a punk, you're an old slut on junk...' Not quite as philosophical, admittedly, but a rare Christmas song in that it tells a good story. The worst ever is by Chris rea, but we won't go into that in depth
I digress. Have a great time, EMR - you deserve it!

No, the worst Christmas song, bar none, is the one about that poxy little kid with his drum
Happy Christmas emr If that first post gets modded for copyright, it won't be by me.

Ah, it's the other worker
I disagree, though. We've had Christmas songs playing in the hotel for three months a year since I was six, and Rea is by far the worst. It seems almost calculated to induce Dad to drive along, tapping fingers on the wheel along to the half-cheery tune, while looking at drivers of other cars to see if they're 'the same as me'. They're all driving home for Christmas, eh? The reason it annoys me was because it always came on the radio as I was driving to work on Christmas Day, though I avoid that now by living in.
I'm willing to agree about the little flaming drummer boy, though, in the name of the festive spirit. As long as Rea is second best

Leo, my aunts and uncles and cousins and great-aunt and great-uncle usually come. Since we come from out of town, we stay at my grandfather's house and host the party.
Thanks for the good wishes, everyone.

I have to admit that I don't mind the Rea song anywhere near as much as I do that bloody Paul McCartney song, or Elton John's Step Into Christmas. And let's not even consider Cliff Richard. Oy!

Rich, I've listened to the Pogues' song three times now. It's terrific.

Merry Christmas, EMR.
They left off my least favorite Christmas song - The Twelve Days of Christmas. Performed by anyone. It goes on forever and is really annoying.

Bum. If I play that link in WMP, it stops after eight seconds; if I try RealPlayer, I get a BMW advert
I've got great memories of that Pogues song. I once led the entire Rock Society of Manchester University in a drunken rendition on the steps of the Union building, conducting about 50 long-haired beer monsters through it. A great night

That sounds backwards, but hope it was fun!
*ducks out before they start competing on all-time-most-annoying songs ever*

I pretty much dislike any of the quasi-modern, poppy Christmas songs. I like the old, traditional British ones and many modern rock ones (if the arrangement is good, I don't mind the electrifying of old songs) but I dislike "Jingle Bells", "Jingle Bell Rock", "Sleigh Ride" and all that sort of thing.

Hope you had a good one EMR!
The Pogues song is great; I also like Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree by Brenda Lee and Merry Christmas To You by I can't remember who. (The one that goes "though it's been said, many times, many ways...")
You scumbag, you maggot, you cheap lousey faggot!

I don't celebrate Christmas, and just about all Christmas songs annoy me. This is, I think, the single exception.

Hi EMR. Hope you had fun. We spent the big day applying artex plaster to the dining room ceiling, and installing some new light fittings. Wonderful. Oh, and I applied online for a few more jobs. I'll get one one day, eh?

All things considered, Christmas was actually pretty good. We had our traditional family dinner without too many recriminations/arguments/sulking cousins, and I got some nice presents, including a couple CDs I'd particularly wanted (London Calling and Wish You Were Here. I have downloaded many of the songs, but I like owning the actual album).
And today, I used my Christmas money to buy an absolutely fantastic pair of leather boots. What a materialistic world we live in.
Seriously though, a few *things* never hurt my feelings of goodwill towards my fellow men, women, children, aunts, uncles and cousins.
Best of luck with the job-finding, TRiG!

I have the DVD of 'The Wall' in American format somewhere. It's of no use to me as I bought it by mistake, found it wouldn't work on my DVD , and bought a UK version. If you'd like it, let me know - I'd rather that than have it gathering dust.

I have the DVD, thanks. It is one of my favourite films, but I will be eternally saddened that 'Hey You' got left out of the film because it was considered to be too depressing. As if the entire film isn't pretty dark...
