A Conversation for What it Was Like in the 1990s

Too Much Nostalgia, Too Soon?

This has always bothered me. Maybe because I the 90s is only decade I remember as I am only 18, but don't you folks this is just a bit overboard? The 90's were nearly 4 yrs ago, its like rememebering what happened yesterday. We haven't had enough time to truly reflect about the IMPORTANCE of the decade. What it means historically, culturally, and economically. Sure we know the events and people, but don't you think we should give it some time before we have a 90s fad...

(As my arguement lacks any evidence other than my own gut feeling and I am too lazy to DEVELOP an argument to support my claims, this is pretty much a free-for-all post. Lets just keep this in mind, VH1 has done I Love the 70s and 80s. This is all part of a nostalgia trend, cause ppl don't know where they are going or how to classify this decade. (Another claim I shall make!))

Ah, but this isn't nostalgia, this is history, in exactly the same way that you have shows near New year looking back at the previous 12 months. We already have entries on the 1960s, the 1970s and 1980s, and having an entry on the most recent complete decade just makes sense. It also makes it another valuable entry for other people to link to in the future (once we've written it up, that is).

You'd have liked Mao Zedong, CM:

When asked about the effects of the French Revolution he replied:

"It's too early to tell."

I agree that 90's flashbacks are happening too soon.

I agree there, there is a wealth of information to be offered for the immediate decade, but my point is that we still have yet to judge the effects of the decade upon society. Sure we benifit from the recent innovations of the internet and cell phones which came into their own in the 90s, sure their are some visable effects, namely the prevalence of network news, but the decade isn't even cold before we start looking back... Sure we can record the events, but can we understand the effects of them...

Very probably, too much, too soon. The 90's are the only decade I remember as well, so I don't really have anything else to compare it too, They could next year of course do the first half decade of the 2000's.
The 90's are almost a non entitiy in terms of fads, the whole britpop thing was just drawing on influences from prvious decades of british music and all sound incredibly like each other (in case you can't tell not exactly a Britpop fan). The 90's started the whole idea of stealing things from other decades and that has recently brought the reinvention of the miniskirt and platforms and the 60's wallpaper clothes, this is a slippery slope people. Just think soon we will be wearing victorian clothes and we will only have the 90's and our own stupidity to blame... i'm taking tis too far aren't I, I'm sorry.

Some of the 90s are 4 years ago. Some of them are as many as 14 years ago!

There has been a lot of nostalgia-tripping going on recently - sdomehting of a turn-of-the-millennium fashion, maybe. I very much enjoyed BBC's "I Love the 70s" and "I Love the 80s" series (was acid house really so long ago? Seems like yesterday); it clearly seemed the obvious next step for them to continue with "I Love the 90s", which began with pleasant reminders of forgotten treasures and trash, but continued through the decade to end with the day before yesterday. At that point, the idea seemed a little strange, but I think it's definitely worth recalling the earlier trends of the decade.
