FC Schalke 04 3 SOUTHAMPTON 3

Saints opened their pre-season account with an enthralling six goal encounter against Bundesliga runners-up FC Schalke 04, in hot and humid conditions at the Kunshan Sports Centre Stadium.

Mark Hughes named a strong first XI for the clash in eastern China, including summer recruit Stuart Armstrong alongside Mario Lemina in midfield, while Matt Targett began in the left wing-back position, having returned from his promotion winning spell with Fulham last term.

Fellow loanee Harrison Reed wasted no time in announcing his return to the Saints fold, netting in the second period, while youngster Jake Hesketh was also on the scoresheet for Hughes's men, as their pre-season campaign got off to a lively, but productive start.

The Bundesliga side drew first blood through forward Ievgenli Konoplyanka, before Nathan Redmond was alive to Charlie Austin's creativity just before half-time to draw Saints level.

A further four goals were scored in the second period, two for each side, with plenty to please manager Hughes, as he embarks upon his first full season as Southampton boss.

Armstrong, playing for the first time in Saints' red and white, nearly had his new side ahead in the fifth minute, squeezing a shot under Ralf Fährmann, who got enough of a touch on the ball to reduce its pace and allow Baba Rahman to recover and clear.

Shane Long continued Saints' early assault moments later, advancing down the left, and attempting to latch onto Targett's driven cross at the back post, which flew wide before the Irishman could connect.

An energetic start from Hughes's men again looked promising in the eighth minute, as Redmond fired narrowly over from distance, after Saints had worked the ball well from back to front.

But it was the Germans who gleaned first advantage in the 21st minute, via tricky Konoplyanka, whose deflected shot looped off the boot of Pierre-Emile Højbjerg, wrong-footed Alex McCarthy, and landed in the net for the game's opener.

Redmond was quick to remedy Saints' deficit however, just before half-time, having forced Fährmann into a fine one-handed save in the preamble.

The winger linked well with Austin, whose deft back-flick on the edge of the area found the continuing run of Redmond, where the eventual shot was inadvertently turned in off Chelsea loanee full-back Baba, to end the half one apiece.

Hughes made a full complement of changes at the interval, including Reed, who had only been on the pitch three minutes before making an instantaneous impact on his first game under the new manager.

Having spent a successful season-long loan at Norwich City last year, the 23-year-old looked full of confidence as he raced onto Jordy Clasie's incisive pass, wriggled free of defender Lennard Czyborra, before calmly slotting between the legs of the Schalke substitute keeper.

The lead was to be short-lived though, as forward Suat Serdar wrestled Domenico Tedesco's side level six minutes later. Steven Skrzybski's square pass found the midfielder, who sidestepped right and curled a precise shot in off the post in the 54th minute.

Goals aplenty, youngster Hesketh restored Saints' lead in the 68th minute, finding the net via a fortunate deflection off defender Benjamin Stambouli's outstretched leg.

Provider turned scorer, Skrzybski then restored parity for Schalke for a second time, seven minutes from the final whistle, with a powerful swerving shot from range, which flew past Fraser Forster and rounded off the game's excitement.

Saints now prepare for the second fixture of their China trip against Chinese Super League side Jiangsu Suning, which is set to be played at the Xuzhou Olympic Sports Centre Stadium on Wednesday 11th (12:30pm BST).

JIANGSU SUNING 2

SOUTHAMPTON 3
Saints continued their productive start to pre-season with victory over Chinese Super League side Jiangsu Suning, in another lively, entertaining affair in China.

Manager Mark Hughes retained the majority of the starting XI that began the 3-3 encounter with Schalke 04 a week ago, but for the introduction of James Ward-Prowse and Manolo Gabbiadini, in place of Shane Long and Charlie Austin.

Again, the conditions were stifling, with the humidity baring down inside the Xuzhou Olympic Sports Centre Stadium. Yet Saints began energetically, much as they did against the Germans in their first outing, considerably the better side, and looking dangerous in attack.

The brightest of which, Nathan Redmond – who rounded off a lively first-half display with a well-taken goal – was getting forward well, providing creative spark on the ball, and also dropping deep to link play in midfield.

Stuart Armstrong continued his encouraging start under Hughes with the assist for Gabbiadini's opener, while Sam Gallagher also got his campaign up and running with the game's winner late in the second half.

Such was Saints' early intent, the first meaningful chance fell their way in the ninth minute, as Matt Targett's high press forced the ball into the path of Redmond, where the winger turned, created a yard of space inside the Suning box, before miscuing the finish, rather off balance.

Redmond was again on the assault in the 16th minute, using a good turn of pace and quick feet to sidestep Yang Boyu, before firing marginally off target, but providing more positive impetus. And the opener arrived shortly after.

Twenty minutes had elapsed before Saints had edged themselves in front, carving open the Suning defence for the game's first goal. Armstrong picked up the ball in a wide area and glided across the bobbly surface before sweeping an inviting cross towards the head of Gabbiadini, who nodded past Li Haito and into the far corner with ease.

Moments later, the hosts were themselves on the scoresheet. Zhang Lingfeng provided the quickfire response in the 28th minute, finishing coolly below Alex McCarthy, after latching onto a smart through ball from Gao Tianyi.

The Chinese enjoyed a spell of pressure towards the backend of the first half, and indeed capitalised, as Richmond Boakye put Suning ahead six minutes after their leveller.

A dead ball was floated towards the back post, where Boyu kept it alive, and Jack Stephens could only head as far as Boakye, who snuck the ball inside the near post to round off the first-half action.

James Ward-Prowse crashed a free-kick off the crossbar in the opening exchanges of the second period, while Mario Lemina was denied by substitute keeper Jiang Hao after pinching the ball on the edge of the Suning area.

Entering the fray at the interval, Fraser Forster was forced into action in the 55th minute, as an ill-timed slip from Hoedt had allowed Boakye a chance to regain the lead. Forster stood tall however, and saved with an outstretched boot.

The second half excitement didn't quite match the first, as energy levels dipped in the heat, but Gallagher's goal 13 minutes from time capped another valuable run-out for Hughes's men.

The 22-year-old played a one-two with Steven Davis, before opening his body and side-footing into the far corner of the net from a tight angle. A forward's finish, it was Gallagher's first Saints strike since returning from a successful loan spell at Birmingham City last season.

Despite their dominance, Southampton were forced to settle for a point on the opening day of their Premier League season after a 0-0 draw with Burnley at St Mary’s.
The well-drilled visitors arrived off the back of valuable competitive minutes in a Europa League qualifier at Istanbul Basaksehir on Thursday.

They settled quickly and almost opened the scoring when Jack Cork curled the ball beyond Alex McCarthy, before being deemed to be in offside position.

McCarthy was also called into action when the ball fell loose to Aaron Lennon inside the area, with the Saints stopper diving bravely to thwart his side-footed effort.

On 18, Saints began to make their mark on the clash and when Ryan Bertrand found space down the left, he sent in a typically inch-perfect delivery for Mario Lemina to flick goalwards and test Joe Hart.

Stuart Armstrong was almost richly-rewarded for his runs into the box, when his low driven ball across the face of goal was begging to be steered home.

Growing in confidence and buoyed by a vociferous St Mary’s, Saints continued to press and the Scotland international playmaker was involved again when Jannik Vestergaard rose highest to head his corner just over.

Stuart Armstrong wins an aerial duel with Burnley's Ben Mee
There was a scare in first-half stoppage though, with McCarthy making another vital save at point-blank range. After Ben Mee had kept the ball alive with some acrobatics at the back post, it fell kindly for Jeff Hendrick who saw his effort kept out.

Just before the hour, Mark Hughes made a double switch which saw Danny Ings and Moi Elyounoussi enter the field, with the former receiving a rousing reception on his homecoming.

Such positive changes gave Saints a boost and they were almost ahead soon after. Mee headed Elyounoussi’s corner delivery back towards his own goal and will have been thankful to teammate Ashley Westwood for his clearance off the line.

The momentum was firmly with the hosts. Ings cut inside and curled an effort just over the angle after Charlie Austin had battled with Matt Lowton on the left.

And that was followed up a dinked cross towards the back post which saw Jack Stephens force Hart into a good save at the near post.

The fleet-footed Ings also created another chance for Norwegian international Elyounoussi who saw his effort blocked behind.
The Clarets had introduced Sam Vokes and Ashley Barnes but were being penned back in their own half.

Five minutes added time offered further hope that Saints would make the elusive breakthrough, with Southampton-born Ings stinging the gloves of Hart late on, but it was not to be.
