pathetic, no shots on goal Tadic missed a penalty, now rumours that Claude Puel's job on the line, he is supposed to have clashed with Redmond, and Bertram at the training ground, VvDijke says (rumour)if Puel stays he's off. J Ward- Prowse swore on being subbed, not played again. Tadic fed up being subbed, Forster useless. Team in turmoil. Normal day for us Saints supporters

Later in the game the Liverpool goalie handled out of his area. no offence committed (should a straight red and off).Anyway we move up to 10th.

a game I attended, Saints as per usual had chances and scored none.

Team with my assessments;Forster: could have saved goal, replace him
Soares: Useful
Stephens: Getting better
Yoshida: Tried hard
Bertrand: Ok
Davis: Tried
Romeu: Could try harder
Ward-Prowse Substituted for Piedat 86'minutes : JWP trying hard Pied had 4 minutes to do what?
Tadic Substituted for Boufal at 65'minutes :Tadic So so Boufal waste of money
Redmond: Waste of time
Austin Substituted for Gabbiadini at 65'minutes:Austin Not fully fit, Gabbiadini flash in the pan , Get rid.

And so the season ends saints scored 17 goals at home, top scorer on 7. Will Puel be manager next season, will saints be taken over ?who knows?

St Gallen V Southampton FC 15/7/17. (Friendly)

ST GALLEN 0 SOUTHAMPTON 0

Southampton’s first friendly match of the summer ended in stalemate, as they drew 0-0 with Swiss Super League side St Gallen.
Saints manager Mauricio Pellegrino fielded different sides in each half in a game that marked the next step in the build-up to the 2017/18 season.

Having finished their training camp in Austria, the squad made the short trip across the border into Switzerland for their meeting with St Gallen, at the Sportanlage Kellen, in the north east of the country.

Pellegrino’s XI for the first half was a mixture of youth and experience, with Aaron O’Driscoll and Jake Flannigan joining Maya Yoshida and Sam McQueen in defence, while 18-year-old Nathan Tella started on the right wing.

Oriol Romeu, Jordy Clasie, Sofiane Boufal, Dušan Tadić and Charlie Austin completed the outfield line-up, with Fraser Forster in goal.

Virgil van Dijk was rested, as Pellegrino reintroduces him to full contact situations carefully, with the defender having been out since January, while Ryan Bertrand was also kept out as a precaution, with a slight hamstring issue.

Forster was called into action after five minutes, as Yannis Tafer hit a low shot across goal from 20 yards, but the Saints keeper dived to his left and was equal to it.

Tadić then went close to giving Saints the lead, as he bent a free-kick from just outside the area over the St Gallen wall and inches wide of the post.

Back down the other end the action went, as the Swiss side nearly edged in front, but Alain Wiss’s back-post header from Tranquillo Barnetta’s corner went a yard wide.

It took a while for another opportunity to appear, as Saints carved out an opening in the 29th minute. McQueen was fed a pass down the left by Boufal, with his cross flicking off a St Gallen head and dropping to Tella at the back post, but his effort was blocked by Andreas Wittwer.

Tella’s afternoon would end ten minutes later, as he went off to be replaced by Tyreke Johnson, having picked up a knock.

Saints were well in control as the game edged towards the break, but they nearly conceded shortly before half-time, as Stjepan Kukuruzovic cut the ball back to Peter Tschernegg, but his low strike back across goal was superbly saved by Forster.

With the scores level at 0-0, Pellegrino made a further ten changes at the interval.

Alex McCarthy replaced Forster in goal, while Jérémy Pied, Alfie Jones, Florin Gardos and Armani Little made up the defence.

Pierre-Emile Højbjerg and Steven Davis joined fellow midfielder Johnson, while Shane Long, Sam Gallagher and Manolo Gabbiadini also came in.

The game continued to be tight, though, and it wasn’t really until midway through the period when either keeper was tested, as Davis’s shot was parried by Daniel Lopar in the St Gallen goal.

At the other end, McCarthy made a superb close-range save to divert Boris Babic’s near-post header to safety, after he had met Gjelbrim Taipi’s corner.
Saints went close to winning it in the final minutes, but Gabbiadini had a low strike saved by Lopar, while Long prodded over as he stretched to meet a ball in the area, before McCarthy made another superb stop at the other end to keep out Marco Aratore's fierce, low free-kick

Brentford 2 Southampton 2
Southampton continued their pre-season preparations with a 2-2 draw against Championship side Brentford at Griffin Park.
Lasse Vibe opened the scoring for Dean Smith's men five minutes before half-time when he converted Sergi Canos' low centre.
But that was cancelled out when a mix-up in the Bees' defence allowed Charlie Austin the sort of opportunity he rarely spurns, duly placing the ball under Dan Bentley to make it 1-1.
Austin struck again on the hour mark to complete the turnaround when he swept home Sam McQueen's low cross with his left foot.
There was another twist to come though, when Brentford substitute Josh Clarke's deep cross found its way beyond Fraser Forster under pressure from Neal Maupay.
Saints had their first real chance when Dušan Tadić’s corner found the head of Austin, who saw his effort tipped over smartly by Bentley.

On 13, Bentley was called into action once more. Austin’s deep cross from the left was met by Shane Long, who rose above Rico Henry, only to be denied by another fingertip save.

It was then Brentford’s turn to test the Saints defence ten minutes later, when a super solo run from Jota was almost rewarded. The diminutive playmaker drifted in from the right, beating two, before pulling his low shot wide.

But the Bees found their sting just before the break to open the deadlock. Canos’ run down the left resulted in a low cross which Vibe applied the finishing touches to from point-blank range.
After the interval, Saints responded well and when Romaine Sawyers and John Egan went for the same ball, it fell kindly for Austin to tuck home the equaliser from 12 yards.
It was to be another for Austin when McQueen's run down the left picked the forward out and he made no mistake with his left foot, sending a piledriver high beyond the keeper.
With eight minutes remaining though, the Championship outfit earned a share of the spoils when Clarke's cross flew in.

Two goals in two minutes and a late Maya Yoshida header earned Southampton victory in their pre-season clash with Ligue 1 side Saint-Étienne.
Two second-half goals in two minutes from Manolo Gabbiadni and James Ward-Prowse gave Saints the lead they had deserved, before Yoshida then headed in five minutes from time to complete the 3-0 win.

Mauricio Pellegrino named a strong starting eleven to face the French side at the Stade Municipal de Chambéry, with Ryan Bertrand coming in at left-back to make his first start of pre-season.

Jérémy Píed lined up in the other full-back position, and it was the Frenchman that created Southampton’s first real change of the game. Bursting forward down the right flank he drove into the penalty area and struck at goal, only to be denied by Stéphane Ruffier in goal for the hosts.

The next chance fell rather fortuitously to Manolo Gabbiadini. The Italian latched onto a loose ball across the Saint-Étienne back line and stretched to provide a finishing touch, but the ball was just too far ahead of the striker.

Píed was continuing to wreak havoc down the right flank and almost helped to break the deadlock once again just before half time. Having dummied past his man from a short corner, the right back crossed for Maya Yoshida to head at goal, but the Saints captain saw his header flash wide of the near post.

Pellegrino made just one change at the interval, as Stuart Taylor replaced Fraser Forster in goal to make his Southampton debut.

And the veteran goalkeeper was called straight into action after Jonathan Bamba struck the foot of the post following a neat piece of interplay on the edge of the Saints penalty area.

At the other end, Sofiane Boufal came close with a diving header at the back post following a deep cross from Dušan Tadič, though he too was denied by Ruffier.

The opener then came after 64 minutes. Fresh from being introduced, Matt Targett drove down the left channel and crossed for Gabbiadini to head superbly into the top corner to give Saints the lead.

Just two minutes later the lead had been doubled. Once again Targett provided the cross into the area, but this time fellow substitute James Ward-Prowse was the man to provide the vital touch with a low finish into the back of the net.

At this point, Saints were really looking dominant and they eventually got a third before the full-time whistle.

Ward-Prowse followed the theme of scorer turning provider, as his out-swinging corner was headed in by Yoshida to seal a 3-0 victory and cap off an excellent week for Saints in France.

Southampton v F C Augsburg :Played 2/8/17

Saints 0 Augsburg 4
Southampton were beaten 4-0 by German side FC Augsburg tonight in their penultimate match of pre-season.
Saints returned to St Mary’s for the first time since the end of the last campaign, but it did not prove to be a happy homecoming for them.

A superb first-half double from Michael Gregoritsch set Augsburg on the way to victory, with Ja-Cheol Koo’s second-half header and a late strike from Raphael Framberger sealing the win.

Mauricio Pellegrino made six changes to the side that started the 3-0 friendly win over Saint-Étienne last Saturday, with Fraser Forster, Maya Yoshida, Jérémy Pied, Oriol Romeu and Charlie Austin the ones who retained starting spots.

Joining them in the line-up were Jan Bednarek, for his first game at St Mary’s, as well as Matt Targett, Pierre-Emile Højbjerg, James Ward-Prowse, Shane Long and Nathan Redmond.

It was Long and Ward-Prowse who nearly combined for the opener after five minutes, as the former delivered a low cross that perfectly picked out his midfield teammate, but Augsburg keeper Marwin Hitz made an excellent save from his first-time shot.

Hitz produced an even more spectacular stop seconds later, as the ball fell to Long to fire in a fierce, angled strike, but the Augsburg stopper was able to tip the ball onto the post at full stretch.

While the early signs had pointed towards Saints dominance, it was the visitors who soon began to take the upper hand.

Forster’s goal came under threat on a good couple of occasions, with the keeper producing a good stop with his feet from Jonathan Schmid’s low strike in the 28th minute, before Alfred Finnbogason fired inches wide shortly after.

Augsburg’s pressure eventually told in the 35th minute, and there was nothing Forster could do about it, as Gregoritsch launched a 30-yard piledriver that rocketed past the outstretched Saints keeper and into the top corner.

Gregoritsch then doubled his team’s advantage four minutes later, as he met Schmid’s in-swinging cross from the left to plant a firm, low header past Forster.

Redmond came close to halving the deficit a minute before half-time, but his sweetly-struck shot from 25 yards hit the bar and went over, after beating Hitz.

Pellegrino, who was experiencing his first game at St Mary’s, made three changes at the interval, as Jack Stephens, Sam McQueen and Jordy Clasie came on for Yoshida, Redmond and Romeu.

Ward-Prowse tested Hitz shortly after the restart with a low shot from outside the area, but the visiting keeper was equal to the midfielder’s drive.

A further two changes would come in the 64th minute, as Long and Austin were withdrawn for Dušan Tadić and Manolo Gabbiadini.

Before they had much chance to make an impact, though, it was 3-0 to the visitors, as Koo rose highest to head home substitute Erik Thommy’s free-kick.

Sofiane Boufal and Ryan Bertrand were then introduced, in place of Ward-Prowse and Targett, but still it couldn’t affect the flow of the game.

Augsburg added a fourth with less than ten minutes remaining, as Framberger drove forward into the area and planted a low shot into the far bottom corner to seal the German side's victory.

Friendlies

Saints completed their pre-season preparation with a victory over Sevilla at St Mary's.
Jack Stephens’ first-half volley gave Saints the advantage going into the break, before Manolo Gabbiadini then confirmed the victory with a cool finish on 82 minutes.
Mauricio Pellegrino named a strong starting eleven for his final pre-season friendly ahead of next weekend’s Premier League opener against Swansea City.
Cédric returned to the Saints line-up at right back for this first time this season, following his late return from the summer due to the Confederations Cup.

There were also starting berths for Ryan Bertrand, James Ward-Prowse, Dušan Tadić, Nathan Redmond and Manolo Gabbiadini.

It was Gabbadini that created the first chance of the afternoon. The Italian striker shifted the ball into space and struck a low, left-footed effort towards goal, but was denied by Sergio Rico.

Six minutes later, however, Saints did have their opener. Ward-Prowse’s corner from the left was flicked on by Gabbiadini at the near post and Stephens volleyed in from close range to take the advantage.
Pellegrino's men took that advantage into the break and almost doubled it shortly after the restart. Gabbiadini rifled a low free-kick into the Sevilla wall and Stephens pounced inside the area to covert the rebound past Rico, only to then be denied by the linesman's flag.
With an hour on the clock, Saints made their first changes of the afternoon. Maya Yoshida and Cédric departed for Jan Bednarek and Jake Flannigan whilst Sofiane Boufal replaced Nathan Redmond.
Victory was then confirmed in the closing minutes of the game. Steven Davis expertly flicked the ball into Gabbiadni’s path for the Italian to stride calmly into the penalty area and finish low into the bottom corner.
